I had a problem with a few areas in photography but Michael explained things to me in such a way that I understand much better. Photography is both a science and an art.
As a science you must know the way a camera works, and the relationship between aperture, focal depth, exposure time and white balance to mention but a few.
As an art you must be able to see the picture, the composition and how you can make a picture interesting and eye catching.
To be able to teach photography requires a deep understanding of both.
