Q&As

We are often asked if it is depressing to "sit around and listen to people's problems all day." Actually, nothing could be further from the truth! While we often do discuss difficult topics in therapy, and difficult feelings show up at times, there are also many great moments of insight and inspiration. It is very rewarding to spend time with people in the toughest circumstances, helping them find the courage to reveal difficult truths or make difficult choices, often leading to amazing periods of growth. We consider it a deep privilege to be offered a client's trust, and to have a ring-side seat while watching people pull off some amazing change!

We are pleased to be able to provide services in-person and online. If you would like to have an on-line appointment from the comfort of your home or office, please just let us know. We use the Doxy video platform for our online sessions in order to maximize privacy and confidentiality. If you are having an online session, we will send you a link in an email. Simply click on the link when it is time for your appointment, give permission for the Doxy program to use your device's camera and mic, and wait in the "virtual waiting room" for your psychologist to join you. There is nothing for you download, which makes this process a breeze!

As is the case with most businesses, we have gone back and forth with our Covid protocols over the past couple of years, trying to strike the right balance between public safety and personal freedom. At this point, we do not require masks to be worn in our practice, but your psychologist will wear a mask during your appointment at your request. We practice social distancing in our waiting room, use air purifiers in the practice, and hand sanitizer is available in all offices. Our team has chosen to be fully vaccinated, and we still expect ourselves (and our clients) to avoid coming to the practice if feeling unwell.

Services

At Southport Psychology, we offer psychological assessment services for clients with a wide range of needs. Sometimes our assessments are mostly based on thoughtful, respectful, in-depth conversations with our clients; these kinds of assessments usually help to identify goals for therapy and are often considered part of the therapy process itself.

At other times, more formal assessment is required. This process usually includes a clinical interview and the administration of one or more psychological tests. These kinds of assessments typically involve a final report being written about the results.

Common reasons for assessment include:

- identifying specific academic difficulties in children/teens/adults
- diagnosing ADHD
- assessing mental health and personality as part of a legal process
- determining a client's readiness to go back to work after a period of short-term or long-term disability
- evaluating a client's readiness to participate in certain occupations (e.g., Armed Forces, police, etc.)
- assessing a person's/couple's readiness to move forward with an adoption

At Southport Psychological, we offer a wide range of therapy services for clients of all ages. Our team of ten psychologists is trained to provide help that is compassionate and relevant, using therapy models that have been proven to be effective (e.g., CBT, ACT, Mindfulness, Solution-focused, EMDR, Psychodynamic, Play therapy, etc.). We are ready to address marital problems, depression, anxiety, trauma, OCD, parenting concerns, workplace stress and general stress, addictions and relapse prevention, death and dying, etc. Our psychologists have a diverse range of specialty interests and prior training experiences, and we strive to make sure that you receive the best match possible when you are ready to work with someone on your concerns.
