About

Opened in 1986, Thai owner’s Joy and Sam Kongsilp wanted to present to their patrons with an authentic Thai dining experience in a 65-seat establishment originally located on Cambie St. Who knew that over 30 years later, their dreams would expand with an impressive 175-seat establishment in the core of Downtown Vancouver.

I was craving Thai food and found this place on yelp. I ordered the Cho Ladda and Pad Thai. I liked the presentation of both dishes. The Cho Ladda steamed dumpling skin was thick with a small amount of meat inside. If you order it ask for dipping sauce. The meat inside is very mild. The Pad Thai was good, but I needed spicy sauce. The sauce was just right and I mixed it into the noodles! The shrimp is tasty! Service was great and the staff us More...

I travel for food, and I'm so glad I found delicious and authentic Thai food in Vancouver, which is less than half the distance between the east coast and Thailand! Food - Tasty and very well seasoned. The fresh basil in the dishes was beautifully accentuated.  Seafood was  very fresh. Happy tummy = happy customer Service - Great customer service. Presentation matters, and the authentic Thai uniform worn by the restaurant staff makes the place look very professional. Well-run business. Ambiance - Very nice selection of wood furniture and art decor. The color combination makes you feel like you're back in Thailand. I felt relaxed the moment I walked in. Price - Reasonable for downtown Vancouver. I'll be coming back, hungry for more. More...

A beautiful day in Downtown Vancouver and we decided to have dinner at Salathai. Appetizers: Sala Thai Spring Rolls and Sala Thai Satay skewers. Entrees: Pad Thai, Gaeng Keaw Whan (Green Curry), and Kaow Ob Supparod (Pineapple Fried Rice). Unfortunately, I was just the photographer! Lol. I didn't have a bite of this due to being on a strict diet, but the rest of my group enjoyed the meal! Will definitely have to come back when I'm off my diet. A nice restaurant, good for groups, and great customer service! More...

(Truly a 3.5 star restaurant but rounding up to 4).A friend recently took me to dinner here to Salathai to celebrate my birthday. Upon entering the restaurant, I was struck by how lovely the interior décor is. It's not readily apparent from the outside what beauty lies within (I for one had passed this place tons of times and had no idea. The exterior is fairly nondescript). There are huge freestanding vats filled with colorful floating lotus flowers, warm wooden Thai benches and overhanging gazebo elements (sorry I'm not familiar with the proper names of all the architectural Thai features), and all the lady servers were dressed in traditional colorful silk Thai garb, complete with lotus flowers in their hair. Perhaps it's all shmaltzy but I found it aesthetically pleasing.I didn't like how there was nobody manning the hostess desk when I walked in to the restaurant, and no-one greeted me, and I waited a bit before walking around and wandering in the place before finding my friend who had arrived early and had secured a table for us. The food was better than average but not "OMG best ever" Thai I've had. My friend and I shared the Pad Thai and the grilled garlic prawn dishes. Both were beautifully plated. The Pad Thai was somewhat bland to me. It was lacking some seasonings I associate with this mainstay Thai dish. The prawn dish was delicious. Portions were fairly small but we still had ample leftovers (note: another reviewed said that leftovers were poorly packed in a cardboard box and the contents leaked through. That wasn't the case with us: our food was packaged up in a sturdy plastic container with a well-sealed lid. The container and lid are so good, I cleaned them out and am keeping them for future use!). Our server was nice but not overly attentive. Took a while to get chopsticks and she never checked back with us mid-meal, only at the end to see if we wanted dessert or the check. But no egregious lapses. All in all, it was a lovely meal and a very pretty restaurant. More...

This is a Thai joint located in Downtown, on Burrard street. They have a spacious interior that is quite clean and nicely decorated. In addition to a regular menu, they also serve lunch specials in the afternoon. I had their Kwae-Teow Num Ped and Salathai Rice Special with Chicken. Both dishes were tasty and generously portioned for the price. The staff weren't the most attentive, although they were fairly friendly. This is definitely one of the better Thai restaurants that I've been so, and I'd strongly recommend checking this place out.Kwae-Teow Num Ped ($14):3.5/5This consisted of roasted duck in soup with rice noodles. There was a good amount of boneless duck present, which was similar to the Chinese bbq version, and was tender and juicy. The broth also had a nice fragrance and also a slightly sweet flavour. The noodles did clump together a bit.Salathai Rice Special with Chicken ($12):4/5This consisted of fried rice topped with a fried egg, and comes with your choice of meat; I had the chicken. The rice was nicely fried and had a great texture and flavour. There was a good amount of chicken present, which was pretty tender. The fried egg was nicely runny, although it was a bit too bland/underseasoned. It came with a small bowl of vegetable soup, which was light and quite savoury.Summary:Food: 4/5Price: 4/5Service: 3/5Overall: 3.5/5Recommendations: Salathai Rice Special More...

Went to Salathai a couple nights ago. We were seated promptly and served promptly. I loved that the server was able to answer all my Thai newbie questions - made it a lot easier for me to make a decision. The place was clean and the service was super polite and friendly! I fell in love with Thai food not after my trip to Thailand several years ago, but after a recent trip to Australia where going out for or ordering in Thai food is as popular as ordering sushi is to us vancouverites. We ordered the classic Pad Thai with chicken and the massaman beef curry, coconut rice and the deep fried banana with homemade coconut ice cream for dessert. Yes, our order was heavy on coconut flavour, but that was exactly what we were feelin. The massaman is super rich in texture and coconut flavour - I loved it! The pad thai was a little lighter in flavour and balanced out the richness of the massaman. The coconut rice is amazing...I could order that just on its own; it's got a creamy flavour and texture even though it looks like a regular sticky rice. I've never had better! The deep fried banana dessert was a good way to end the meal and hit the spot. It was split in two so the perfect share dessert.  My one criticism would be that the meat in both dishes was quite cooked so it was a little harder than sliced beef or sliced chicken you may find in other Asian cuisines. That said, it's a thin cut so it wasn't difficult to eat. Overall I recommend to anyone looking for good Thai food in the city and I'm excited to go back and try something a little more exotic to Thai cuisine. More...

Great Thai food that has both vegan and GF options. Mains are a bit on the pricey side and don't come with rice but are so flavorful I consider it worth it. I ordered Pa-Naeng (Bell peppers, lime leaves and Thai basil leaves.Cooked in a specialty thick red curry with coconut cream and tofu). This is so flavorful and so rich. The sauce is thick and accompanied with rice, it was such a hit! I would have liked to see more peppers but it was really good!Next, we ordered Pad Thai (Our most popular Thai rice noodle dish with shrimp, egg, tofu, bean sprouts and ground peanuts) but vegan. This dish is worth coming here! It was so flavorful! Last, we ordered Salathai Garden (Sautéed assorted vegetables with house curry sauce & coconut milk). This was so smooth and rich. The sauce was so velvety and really nice.Service was super attentive. They are quick and friendly. The only complaint we had was the seats. They are not comfortable at all. I had a major craving for some classic Pad Thai and came here from a friend's recommendation. As soon as you walk in you'll see that it is decorated in traditional Thai décor (including the wait staff's uniforms! ) and quite spacious, which makes it a great option if you have a big party. There were only 2 of us so we were seated right away and given quite an extensive menu of food. I was surprised that there weren't as many vegetarian options as I had expected from a Thai restaurant, but I didn't mind too much because I went with the classic tofu Pad Thai that I had been wanting. Another thing I noticed was that they don't provide you with hoisin or soy sauce and they charge extra for any that you want which I thought was a bit strange for a place that seemed a little more upscale than your takeout spots. I've had all sorts of Pad Thai - from the "real stuff" in Thailand to my favourite takeout spot in University, and this place fell in the middle since it was just average. The portion sizes are really big and the food is reasonably priced for the venue which is great! However, the service left a lot to be desired. Even though all the wait staff were lovely when you spoke with them, the service was extremely slow - our waiter checked in on us within two minutes of us starting our meals to ask if everything was good, but it was a bit of a struggle to catch her attention to ask for the bill, and there was a bit of a wait for the machine as well.Overall, I liked this spot and would come back if I was craving Thai in the area but wouldn't classify it as being anything extraordinary!
