Going to the Canadian Institute of Floral Design was an incredibly valuable experience for me. Not only did it fast track my education, but was a warm, supportive, fun and funny environment to learn in. Don, Melissa and Mary are fantastic instructors, who I connected with on a deeper level. While i wish the course was longer so we could have fleshed out some lessons a bit more, I came away with a greater understanding of floral design and design aspects in general. The most valuable experience in my opinion, was the trip to the circle. Visiting wholesalers and seeing the inner workers of the OFG clock was a great and insightful experience, that many out of town florists do not have. Attending CIFD Floral Design School was amazing. Don, Mellissa and their team of industry experts provided us the tools and information needed to be successful floral designers. CIFD has a single focus - teach about floral design and the floral industry and prepare the students to feel confident as they begin their journey, it was very well balanced. Attended the 3 week course at CIFD and absolutely loved it. Traveled from NS to take this course and the instructors made me feel so welcome. Fast past course but taught in a way that isn't overwhelming and easy to grasped. I travelled across the country (BC) to attend this program and it was well worth it. The head instructor, Melissa, and founder, Don are both well-versed veterans of the trade. Their decades of experience is very prevalent every day, throughout each week, and in each class. They educate with the theory and practical skillset in mind. They show up (early) every day to ensure students leave with an exceptional foundation upon graduation. Beyond the shared knowledge to work in the floral trade, they also gift students an understanding of the passion required and realities needed to be known to succeed in the field. Not only do they have decades of experience to share, but deliver their education in tandem with additional guest instructors currently active in the GTA. I'd recommend this program to anyone, and everyone in a heartbeat. There is nothing more wonderful to learn from (genuine) experts who illuminate their work through humility. It was my absolute pleasure to be a part of the Oct/Nov 2023 professional floral design program. Each day of the training was jam packed with theory and most importantly, an abundance of opportunities to work with flowers and the related products to create beautiful and marketable floral arrangements. The flower supplies made available for students on a daily basis throughout the program was always fresh and extremely generous. It brought a smile to my face everyday that I was able to bring home at least a piece of floral creation that I learned how to put together. I was very impressed with the care and thoughtfulness that the school put in to curate a curriculum that is practical and provides the needed foundation for anyone looking to establish a floral design business needs to succeed. I enjoyed every aspect of the program from the opportunity to meet with instructors who bring a different sense of style and floral expertise to the table, to the emphasis placed on helping students hone the needed knowledge for them to be successful such as plant identification, flower conditioning and preparation, floral wiring techniques, wholesale flower trade, etc. The excursion to flower auctioning facility and wholesalers was a highlight of a program that one should not miss and was eyeopening for me personally. As a technology oriented self who normally spend much of my time in front of a computer, this 3-week hands-on program enabled me to clear my mind, become laser-focused on a medium that I adore and rediscover my creative side and gain the needed confidence to create beautiful things for the world to see. “The most beautiful flowers I have ever seen.” That was what we heard throughout our wedding day and in the months since. Don Waltho and Melissa Christina and their team from the Canadian Institute of Floral Design, decorated our wedding and it was above and beyond anything we could have imagined . Not only did they manage to work around flower shortages due to the pandemic, but they also had to deal with major wedding changes just a month prior to the date (from a smaller entirely outdoor wedding to a larger wedding with outdoor ceremony and indoor reception). We met with Don and Melissa twice, giving them the details of the wedding/bridal party and what we were generally hoping for. We gave them some photo inspiration of other wedding decor we had seen that we liked, and then they did the rest. They provided us an archway, flower stands, runners, candles, boutonnieres, bouquets, garlands and centerpieces. The arrangements were truly a work of art, but don’t take our word for it, see pictures below for examples. And not only was their décor amazing, but these are two incredibly kind and good-natured people. They were absolutely a pleasure to work with and we cannot recommend them enough!
