Monastery Spa

The Rooms were nice on our stay and we loved the Spa. We enjoyed getting a couples massage. The hotel is about a 15 min walk to town so a little farther then we liked. There was Pastries and Coffee at the front desk but they never seemed to be refreshed. So the same muffin and 2 cookies sat there all 4 days so we just stayed away and made the 15 walk to get coffee or food. Would be nice to have some kind of light breakfast option. More...

We chose the Monastery Spa Hotel as a place to relax and enjoy our last few days in Newfoundland. We enjoyed a friendly welcome to the hotel by the front desk staff and were really happy with our cozy jacuzzi king suite. The bed was very comfortable and the room had a sense of quiet luxury. The Monastery Spa and Suites is a wonderful property with very pleasant and helpful staff. Our room was clean, large and comfortable. We had breakfast in the dining room twice and found the food and service excellent. So relaxing and staff are very friendly. There's a 5 to 10 day hold on the pre auth to reserve the room, which is not explained initially. My husband and I enjoyed 2 nights at the Monastery at the end of June. The property is in a residential area, about 2.3 kilometers from downtown St. John’s. There is a large parking lot on site that is free of charge – we didn’t have a vehicle and found walking to and from downtown an interesting and easy walk. The location is good as it's close to the Newman Vaults & the railway museum, which are also stops on the Hop On Hop Off bus as well as the Link.||||After an overnight flight, we arrived quite early in the morning & were pleased to have been allowed to check in early & unpack. We were surprised that our room was in the basement of the hotel, along with one other guest room, conference rooms & the laundry room (this was not evident from the website, booking a “standard room, king bed, no Jacuzzi”). Upon entering our room, we were pleasantly surprised to see a comfortable and clean room, with a little fireplace, nice bedding, desk with coffee maker, mini fridge and well-appointed bathroom with tub/shower. There was a narrow window that let some light in & had blinds to close for privacy. We missed having an in room safe & clock radio. Another difference we noted was housekeeping is at the end of every 3rd day of your stay, so our room wasn't made up for the 2 nights we were there.||||Our room was comfortable and fairly quiet (we were woken up one morning by staff talking in the laundry room, via the air vent). There is a Vitality Room which we used each evening to relax (hot & cold tubs, sauna, and fitness room). When we checked in we were provided with a sheet of paper indicating we needed wristbands to access the Vitality Room but when we later asked for them, we were told we didn't need them. ||||The front desk area has a cooler with complimentary bottled water, coffee & tea – as well as a pastry container but it only ever had crumbs in it, never any pastries. WIFI is free and we were given the password at check in. ||||There is a small restaurant on site (in the spa building) The Abbey Cafe and we enjoyed our breakfast there our first morning. The service was friendly and the food delicious.||||We also had a couples massage at the spa (connected via underground pathway) and it was the worst and oddest massage we'd ever had. The morning of our massage we requested a late check out (noon) and that was accommodated, which we appreciated.||||Overall we enjoyed our stay at Monastery Hotel (Monastery Spa & Suites). More...

I stayed in a King Jacuzzi Suite. It was lovely, clean and had great amenities (Fridge, coffee maker, fireplace). The only drawback was the trip outside to the main building for ice. Lovely room and service, easy to check in and out, and the bed was absolutely divine. Tub in the bedroom was also quite nice, although could do with a set of instructions! Didnt make use of any of the spa services as they were quite expensive, but there was a broad range for anyone who was interested...With that said, timings for services/facilities were not very convenient. Breakfast is served at 8:15 earliest, and the gym opens quite late, both of which leave early morning travelers or business people unable to make use of any of these facilities if going into town (which was unfortunate as the gym/breakfast were the thing that swayed us in favour of Monastery Spa in the first place). Also worth noting that the WiFi was quite weak/inconsistent throughout the hotel.Finally, this should be obvious from its location on the map, but be warned that the first breakfast place downtown is at least a 20 minute walk, while the first restaurant downtown is at least 5-10 minutes more than that.
