This is a well organized store. I am in huge favour of mom and pop shops. Lots of fresh flowers and seed options. It inspires me to want to start gardening, however, I was just here to pick up some 4 inch pots to make some crafts and to house some home grown flowers as a house warming gift. Great customer service and prices were more than fair. I was actually recommended this place by someone at my local Canadian Tire who comes here all the time for her gardening needs. The tip was appreciated. More...

This is my "go to" garden centre and has been a decades long part of the Kitsilano neighbourhood. Staff are helpful and friendly. Selection and variety are good and only limited by the shop's size. Parking is free. If you're a neighbour, shop local and enjoy the experience. More...

I also was surprised by the negative review about David Hunter Garden Centre. Kinda sounded like they were more interested in promoting other businesses due to this its not really a review I would take into consideration. I have only had great experiences here, they always offer to help me out with loading my car or carrying out plants, they give me great gardening advice when I bring in pictures or clippings without making a purchase. All around I find this place to be professional and more then willing to help. They also do amazing huge special order hanging baskets and I mean HUGE I recommend looking into them but they also sell really nice on the shelf baskets too, I bought 5 they were so nice I could of bought 10! Amazing store- a must go to if you are looking to spruce up your garden or try your hand at growing some plants. Neatly arranged shelves. Tidy storefront with gorgeous plant displays out front. Excellent prices. Wide selection of seeds, bulbs, succulents, and outdoor shrubs/trees. Very very healthy plants and really good prices too. The staff were super friendly and helpful as well as patient with my endless questions (I'm a novice gardener). I am definitely going back soon to grab some shrubs for my garden! Best plant nursery in Vancouver in my opinion! More...

Woah woah woah, what's with the negative reviews? I think people expect to be pampered, have the carpet rolled out for them, maybe a back massage and to find out the winning lottery numbers. ..because I went here expecting the worst but found it completely positive. The staff members weren't hovering which is always appreciated because I tend to want to wander when I'm at a gardening centre. When I did need help, they were extremely friendly and helpful with tips and suggestions. I thought I was buying the right plant fertilizer and when I was at the till, she asked what I was using it for and when I told her, she told me in a really nice way that it was the wrong type for the plant I was hoping to fertilize. Thanks for saving me money and for correcting me in a really nice way without making me seem like an idiot (even though I totally was because I didn't do my research)! All the prices are comparable to other gardening centres (including Home Depot). For example the sea soil was only $1 more than Home Depot. Sometimes you don't mind spending that extra $1 to support local, or if you're too lazy to drive to a Home Depot. I also love their seedling kits for those without a green thumb or the patience (as in you stare at it hoping it'd pop a leaf after just sowing it...an hour ago hehe). Thanks for the free parking! It makes my indecisive shopping feel less pressured :)I love the vibe here. I've been here twice and look forward to the many more visits to come. More...

This garden shop has everything! My favourite part about shopping here is the expertise and support.Rebecca is extremely knowledgeable and patient. She has given me so much guidance! My garden is thriving because of the support I get from her and her team. I appreciate that if someone doesn't know something, they will try to find the answer. The comments about the rude staff are bizarre. I have been shopping here throughout the year since they first opened and I have never had a bad experience. Sometimes they are extremely busy, but they always do the best that they can. Everyone is always asking tons of questions and they do everything they can to attend to each person.*Also - the prices are competitive and there is free parking. I am so grateful for this awesome local shop! More...

I have never really noticed this plant store behind White Spot before. It's quite a small store compared to most places.  Why I like it 1) Convenient location in Vancouver with lots of free parking !!2) It's my first time "attempting" gardening and the staff were so friendly answering all my questions3) No one tried to sell me lots of supplies I don't need4) I like the collection of outdoor plants5) Reasonable pricesThe only part I would improve on would be to add a lot more indoor plants to the collection. Being an expert plant killer, I always enter garden stores with trepidation...but I just had the best experience at David Hunter in Surrey on 152nd. I had a zillion questions about the care for my little patio garden, and the lady who helped me really knew her stuff. Not just standard advice, she took me through every step in curing and preventing all the problems I'm facing with fertilizer, mildew, pruning, pest control and re-potting. I feel like I just went to gardening school! Props to this local business, for their first class customer service. More...

The graffiti-covered abandoned KFC became David Hunter - yay!I was never a terribly frequent visitor of David Hunter when it was located up the street at Maple. I used it like a 7-11, I would go in and grab the one item I was too lazy to go pick up at the big nursery out in the 'burbs. It isn't that their plant quality isn't good, because it is, but it is geared towards the run-of-the-mill "Proven Winners" kind of plants and I like the more unusual varieties and cultivars. They manage to cram a whole lot of plants and gardening accessories into a former fast food establishment! For city dwellers who need access to a decent garden center within the city boundaries, this is a solid option and I am glad to see them back. More...

I'm so glad they're back on Broadway. It's kind of a desert out here in terms of garden centres and the drive out to their plant wonderland in Surrey is a bit of a pill, even for a gardening nerd like me. Ever since they opened this Spring, their collection of plants has been growing. Usual and more unusual seedlings, flowers, bushes, and trees are for sale. And, they're mostly from healthy stock. Sickly, leggy, and root-bound stuff is for...other places.Their stock of garden accessories, soil amenders, etc. is also larger every time I go back and they'll take down your requests for anything they don't have at this location because most likely they'll have it at their larger Surrey store.Staff are friendly, but knowledge varies. A few know even less than me (Quit pinching off the suckers from my DETERMINATE tomato plant, woman!), but many are walking encyclopedias and great about sharing what they know.Prices are garden centre costs, but Wednesdays are 10% off of everything. I went to David Hunter based on the 3 reviews already posted and I was not disappointed.  DHGC is a wonderful place to shop for a wide variety of plants.  I went specifically to purchase garden herbs and they had the best selection I have seen in Vancouver.  I liked the organization of the store and they had a tremendous selection of healthy plants.  One thing worth mentioning, they put the more fully formed (and expensive) herbs at the front of the section; however, they also sold less expensive starter cell-packs (e.g., five starter basil plants sold for $1.99).  I filled my basket with the more expensive variety until I found the cell-packs.  They also had a great selection of seeds, soils, natural fertilizers, and planters.  Everything was priced on a moderate to pricey scale. I really liked the staff, all were courteous and knowledgable.  I didn't speak to the volunteers, but their desk was extremely busy with people lined up to talk to them about how to plan for a successful growing season.  From what I overheard the volunteers were also knowledgable and super nice.  DHGC is my new garden center of choice. This is the best garden store in the city!I look forward to spring each year for two reasons. The end of the rains, and my yearly trip to David Hunter. A little oasis tucked in amongst the busy city streets. The staff are always helpful, and their plants are bug and disease free (unlike HomeDepot and others!).Even if you are a little late in your garden planning, they always have nearly full grown veg plants for sale in the summer. Our garden exists on a measly 43 square foot downtown balcony, but with Hunter Gardens, we reap the benefits of our own produce all summer long! Mmmmmm More...

Yes and yippie - I didn't wear a jacket today as I skipped along to browse perennials, took in a whiff of blooming blossoms and contemplated just how to fit it all on my little balcony. What is most impressive about this store is the quality. Other times, when I've shopped at the big guy stores, I have to rummage through sickly plants to find good ones. I should know better. Choosing living plants is like choosing produce. If it's mixed in with the sick, it's likely sick itself. But at David Hunter, I haven't had that problem! As Jill G mentions, the service here is amazing. These guys and gals know their stuff! Which is helpful if you're green thumb is itsy-witsy!I settled on some potatoes (purple ones to boot!); seeds for peas and beans; potting soil (to plant the avocado seed that has been submerged in water for a few months); and a new cedar planter box for all of my spring time wonders. I would have continued to buy out the lettuces, sweet peas, and even brussel sprouts if only my balcony could handle it. More...

Every season is right for a trip to David Hunter Garden Centre.  I first came here in spring to find all the things I wanted to plant.  From seeds to succulents, ferns to trees, they've got it.  The selection here is just great, the prices are good, but the nicest thing here is the service.  During planting season they have volunteer "expert gardeners" available to help you make decisions of what to plant when and where.  Even when the volunteers aren't there, the staff who work here are friendly and very helpful.  If you have a green thumb, this is really the place to revel in all the lovely flora that you could imagine coaxing to grow.
