Q&As

Helping people overcome challenges that they never thought they could overcome; seeing clients regain their confidence, clarity, and strength so that they can live their best lives possible.

The freedom to help others using the most effective, personalized means possible, opposed to ones that are dictated by a funder, agency, or an insurance company.

I worked in non-profit for a long time and, although it was a fabulous experience, a lot of the techniques and time lines were bound to what the agency and it's funders dictated opposed to what would actually be the most effective for each individual client. EAP and EFAP programs work this way as well. Having the freedom to offer individualized services to meet the specific needs of each unique client is rewarding and refreshing.

I also love doing online video counselling as it gives people the means of receiving services who would otherwise not be able to (or who would find it difficult or inconvenient).

I believe clients should choose whoever is the best "fit" for them. Research shows that the counsellor-client relationship is one of the most important factors to success in counselling. Knowing this, I offer free 20 minute phone consultations so that you can get to know me a bit better. I encourage clients to visit my website to learn more about me and if they feel like I am a fit to contact me at (587) 802-4145 or email me at amy@coreconnectionscounselling.com to book your free consultation.

Each person's experience of depression and anxiety is unique. Low energy and even lower motivation, a loss of interest in things you once loved, mood swings, irritability, and the desire to withdraw and hide-away from the world are characteristics of depression. Constant worry about the past and future, rushing thoughts and fears, rapid heartbeat, difficulty sleeping, and an intense feeling of overwhelm are characteristics of anxiety. Whether you are experiencing some or all of these symptoms, know that you are not alone and that there is a way to relieve the suffering.

Anxiety and depression are not rare - according to the Canadian Mental Health Association, over one-third of Canadians report having experienced some variation of the two themselves. Although anxiety and depression can be experienced independently of the other, the two often impact an individual either together or in sequence. They have a strong influence on all areas of people's lives, including work, relationships, and family. Anxiety and depression can be devastating and without the right tools and skills, tremendously difficult to navigate on one's own.

Using a collaborative approach, I work with individuals suffering from anxiety and depression to investigate possible sources of their mental health concerns, including biological, psychological, environmental, situational, spiritual, or a combination of the aforementioned. Integrating evidence-based research with creative and personalized counselling approaches, I will work with each person to forge a unique plan to overcoming and/or managing their individual challenges. The aim of my counselling approach is to leave each individual with an increased understanding of themselves and confidence that they can live their best life possible regardless of their past, present and future circumstances.

You are not alone and there is a better life waiting for you. I can attest to this as I, too, have experienced both anxiety and depression at various points in my life. I have learned to create a fulfilling and rewarding life not so much in spite of my challenges, but because of them, and you can, too.

Individuals with chronic illnesses, particularly illnesses that are misunderstood by the medical community and general public, can benefit greatly from a counselling approach focused on symptom management and the easing of secondary symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and grief. Because there is often no official scientific cure for these illnesses, counselling will focus on setting individual goals and personalized plans exploring not only behavioural and cognitive realms but also, if there is interest, spiritual and emotional ones. My ultimate goal is to leave each person with a greater sense of self, the strength and resilience necessary to overcome future challenges, and the skills needed to live their best life possible.

While I specialize in working with people with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), the counselling techniques I utilize can be highly beneficial to individuals living with any type of chronic illness.

Parenting can be the most challenging yet the most rewarding role a person can have during their lifetime. There is no other role in which one is handed such high responsibility with such little guidance and training in which to carry it out. Each child is a unique being, born with their own unique combination of traits. To make matters more complicated, there seem to be as many parenting books published annually as there are children born. This can lead to parents feeling not only confused by the contradictory information they receive but also overwhelmed. In my career I have worked with many parents who are trying their very best for their children, yet feel like they are playing a constant guessing game when it comes to how to best parent their unique little ones. They are searching for some inner compass in which they can rely on to navigate the constantly changing challenge of parenting. I can help you find just that!

Using a relationship and attachment-based parenting approach, I strive to coach parents with young children (0-6) experiencing everyday challenges to adopt modern, research-based, best practices that nurture strong parent-child relationships that will last a lifetime. My approach provides specialized support utilizing neuro-developmental research and a relationship-based attachment parenting lens to help parents navigate specific challenges such as tantrums, child aggression, alpha-child characteristics, and childhood anxiety and depression.

Parents of highly sensitive children and children with BIG emotions and BIG behaviours would also benefit from this type of counselling support.
