Clear Choice Painting

We live in a condo that is undergoing outside reconstruction and because of the outside reconstruction - some of the walls in our condo (7 walls) had nail pops and needed to be repaired and repainted and all the windows and the patio door were replaced so the casings and patio door casings needed to be painted. When Mel came to do the estimate, he was very charming and said that we would find no better painter than him and that he had only 5 star reviews. Well he completely sold us on using him even though I had two other quotes and one that was a better price than his.
This review is negative because he did not fulfill his written estimate and what he promised he would do. Firstly, he said that it would take two days to finish the job. So we agreed on the following Tuesday and Wednesday for him to come. But when he arrived to do the painting, he said that he would not be able to come Wednesday because he was suppose to get the keys for his new house. Well he should have known that was the case before he set the dates for painting. We said -- no problem -- just come Thursday instead. Well surprise surprise -- when I came home he said he was done the entire job in one day that was originally suppose to take two days.
The other quotes also quoted 2 days to do the work.
I did not stay to watch him do the job because I thought he would be honest and professional and paint our house as if it was his own.
Here are some things that I think he should consider for the future. I think he lied to us when he said that he would come Tuesday and Wednesday to complete the work because my husband is in real estate and the date is set for key pick up far in advance - so he knew he would not be painting on Wednesday.
Secondly, - I asked him to remove the window coverings before he would paint our window casings. He insisted that would not be necessary because he knows what he is doing. Well he dripped paint onto one of our window coverings and even though he tried to remove it, the paint stain is still there. Also, after he finished, I checked and some of our casings need to be touched up with silicone and paint as there are still spots that lack paint and sealing/caulking and do not look polished.
Thirdly, he promised to do TWO coats of paint on each wall. Keeping in mind that some of the walls are very small and only one wall did not have a window on it. But when I came home he said that only the blue wall in the master bedroom needed two coats of paint. The others did not. In his estimate he charged for 2 coats of paint per wall and we paid for 2 coats of paint but he did not reimburse us for NOT doing 2 coats on each wall (we over paid him $280.00 for the other 7 walls that only received one coat -some of these walls had very small areas to paint). We supplied the paint so he did not have to buy any and he said that the paint was very high quality and something that he would buy. I told him if he ran out of paint that we would go get more but he said that his estimate included any more paint that he would need if he ran out and he would be responsible to buy it.
Fourthly, the south wall in the master bedroom -- the only one without a window. still shows at least 5 nail pops - and one spot where paint is missing close to the base board. Very disappointing.
Fifthly, he said he would drape the furniture but I found spots of white paint on our leather couch - thankfully I could remove it.
Sixthly, I found wall paint dripped onto the master bedroom window casing.
He also failed to clean up completely. I cleaned up the sanding in the kitchen as he forgot to.
Mel, you said that you guarantee your work for 2 years. I look forward to you contacting me to correct any of the deficiencies I have reviewed. More...

They arrived on time on the agreed date and completed the work in two long days. They did an excellent job and were pleasant to interact with. I would have no reservations to hire them again or recommend them to a friend. More...
