Q&As

I have been teaching piano for over half my life now and I love it more every year. I enjoy working with students of all ages and levels, finding just the right fit in terms of lesson content and style, fostering deeper understanding and appreciation for music, and most of all enabling my students to do precisely what they want to do with their piano lessons, whether exploring a variety of music genres, mastering Royal Conservatory, or learning all their favourite songs.

I love teaching and I love music. Piano has been an incredibly important part of my life since I was six years old, and I feel incredibly privileged to have the opportunity to pass on what I have learned to others. I believe in gentle teaching, keeping a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, working in games and techniques to encourage enjoyment, tailoring the lessons to fit each student's needs and goals, and providing good communication to support learning and growth in the best possible ways. I am always available to support students (and parents!) in their practice and exploration of music, keeping a good balance between challenge and reward, and encouraging students to develop the skills and independence they need to make this magic all on their own.

Bumblebee's Piano Lessons provides a thorough foundation in piano & a tailored exploration of music through gentle teaching.

We explore music using an ever-broadening music library and instill a love of piano by finding the styles and songs that resonate with each musician.

We gameify learning and have fun wherever possible so we learn well and become musicians who love piano.

We encourage through gentle teaching, with collaborative learning and practice methods that focus time and effort to make piano rewarding.

We work from a growth mindset and celebrate all progress, cheering on students with feedback, prizes, and,
of course, stickers.

We recognise each student is a unique individual and this is their musical adventures; we skill-build according to their needs and to support their interests at their pace.

We develop a thorough foundation of skill & understanding, so students become independent, confident musicians who make the music their own.

I offer online lessons (via Skype & Zoom) also for students age 4 through adults. Online lessons have several advantages. Times can be more flexible as travel time isn't required (which also lowers your tuition fees); they foster more independence and good listening skills, so musicianship develops more quickly; and online lessons are available for anywhere with sufficient internet connection.

For students age 8 & under, a responsible adult must attend the lessons with them to assist the student with following instructions, staying on task, technical troubleshooting, etc. until the student reaches that point of independence. Just like in-person lessons, you will need a piano or keyboard suitable for lessons and a quiet area during the lesson time.

Online lessons also require a device with a webcam, a large enough screen the student can see shared sheet music, demonstrated technique, etc. (usually an iPad or laptop works best), a microphone that can pick up speech and the piano sufficiently, and sufficient sound and volume quality on your end that instruction and music comes through clearly. Most devices have all of this already built in, but we can do test runs to confirm before your lessons start. I also provide tutorial videos that will walk you through necessary audio settings to give you the best experience in your lessons.

Online lessons are available if we need to switch for a time. I do not teach at anyone's house if someone in the household has or is suspected to have Covid-19. I monitor my own health closely and do not teach while sick. I am happy to wear a face mask according to your preferences and comfort level and I can also observe social distancing throughout your lesson.
