What makes a great website?
A great website is one that loads fast, is highly functional, ranks well on search engines, entices people to go to it often, allows customers to contact you easily, and still looks awesome.
Some business owners, and even website builders, concentrate only on one aspect of the build. The site may look pretty but be functionally horrible, especially on mobile devices or tablets. It may be highly functional on all devices but lack real information and content.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
The types of questions we ask include specifics about their goals, their brand, and what have they tried before with online marketing. Specifically, we ask:
When was the last time you updated your website?
How much knowledge do you have about managing a website?
Are you selling a product or a service?
What is your social media like?
What is your 1st, 2nd, 3rd priority in how you want your website to work for you?
Who is the biggest competitor in your area or industry?
What type of feeling you do want potential customers to have when they go to your website?
Have you ever implemented strategies like SEO marketing?
What are three goals you want to achieve with your website and when would you like to achieve them?
Describe your creative process.
We start our creative process by looking first at the client's goals and defining expectations. Our team looks at their website and how it is functioning or not functioning to achieve these goals.
Then I look at the customer's competition and what they are doing. I see how their methods are working for them in both search engine ranking, the number of views and also looking at their reviews from customers.
Now, the creative process can take over.
We take all that information and begin to map out a plan of what should be changed with our client's website to make more of a splash in the market. While changing the website's look tends to lend to more of the creative side, I would say the most creativity comes in creating the entire package. Everything must work together and flow correctly to allow the website to fully reach the customer's desired goals.
A mapped plan usually includes some technical aspects of the website, which are usually the easiest to fix but could also include revamping the site to look more streamlined and modern, adding SEO content, and other things. The best plans that allow the most success also include things like social media implementation and customer reviews.
This off-site work is sometimes neglected by clients but using it creatively with your website can jumpstart both views and rankings.
What information do you need from a client before you can start work?
We need to know some history of the company, the type of product or service they provide, some of what they've done in the past, and how long they've been online with this website.
All of these give us a hint of the priorities, targeted customers, their past marketing experiences, and image they currently have.
Necessary information includes things like:
The demographic of the customers the business wants to target now.
Some things they like and don't like about their current site.
Whether they are looking to change how they are promoting their business, whether they are adding new products or services, or shifting directions.
Whether they are planning to aim at more high-dollar customers or are interested in that market.
What do you love most about your job?
We love our job because it allows us to help small business customers using my talents and creativity in unique ways. Every client and business is different so no two days are the same. It is a job that can be challenging but that is exciting for me.
We work around the clock to serve clients' needs because that is what I love to do. I love to meet other people's needs and see businesses become successful and thrive because of what I offer them.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I am a problem-solver and I love small businesses. This was an option I thought of that could combine both of those attributes and also use my creative and technical skills. I also knew that starting my own business would allow me more face-time with customers than if I worked under the umbrella of a company.
I could give them more time and personal attention. Also, I could take the time to oversee every detail of their marketing by owning my own business. That is important because it ensures their needs are better met than those who are clients of a larger company.
Why should our clients choose you?
We are a boutique company, which means we offer more personal attention to all our clients. We get to know the business owner and seek to understand their marketing and business needs. One size doesn't fit all and a boutique company like ours takes the time to develop a customized plan that suits the client's needs exactly.
Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.
Yes, the beauty of providing services like website design, marketing, and SEO packages is they can be done remotely and online. Communication is the number one factor required in this type of work.
Besides phones, we use Skype to communicate from across the continent and can use other meeting applications like Zoom or GoToMeeting to see who we are talking to or hold a meeting with several people.
Applications like Google Docs, Adobe, and DocuSign are wonderful ways to share plans, packages, contracts, and information while a client's project is in progress. They can preview websites to see how they are transforming and we keep them up-to-date with specific changes to both the front and back end systems.
We also send them previews of written and image content suggested for their site for their approval. We can even test their site to see how it functions with different templates, layouts, or content and send copies of the results to them.
What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?
COVID-19 changed a few things about how we do business. I meet less in person with clients or potential clients, instead opting to talk with them more on the phone or electronically. Meetings are more online than they used to be. That is more to make the client feel safe than to satisfy my own comfort level.
Making a client feel safe and comfortable has become more important whether it's having hand sanitizer at my desk or opting to meet online. Masks are now a required accessory in most situations.
I must gauge the client's comfort level for an in-person meeting before suggesting it. Some people are geared for that and still like to do business in person while others are hesitant. I have become more sensitive to their concerns before suggesting things so that my suggestions are more in line with their comfort level.
