What inspired you to start your own business?
I passed my board examination in June 2019 with distinction and are registered as a Registered Counsellor (Independent Practitioner) at the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). I studied my B Psychology (Counselling) at Pearson Institute of Higher Education and are currently in the process of completing my MA Psychology (Research) at Nelson Mandela University. During the final year of studies, BPsych students are required to complete a dissertation and 720 hours practicum. I focused on the influence of karate on the self-esteem of 9 to 10 year old children for my thesis. My practicum was done at Herbert Hurd Primary School, Umicare Remedial School, Thuthuzela Care Centre (Dora Nginza Hospital), and Oosterland Child and Youth Care Centre, which gave me a lot of practical experience working with a diversity of individuals. As many of my placement sites required counselling for children, I fell in love with working with younger individuals. I am a strong believer that an individual’s foundation is built early in his/her live, that is why I am dedicated to focus on mental health at an early age.
I work with clients to help them navigate their inner world of emotion. My primary interest and objective is to help guide clients to new, healthier ways of navigating both their internal and external worlds. I am a big advocate for self-love and a big part of counselling with me will be developing clients’ relationships with themselves and others around them. I have a special interest in children and adolescent counselling and draws eclectically from various perspectives to offer my clients a tailored approach to meet their unique needs.
Counselling for children - Play therapy
“To play it out is the most natural self-healing process in childhood” – Erik Erikson
Play therapy is a form of counselling in which play is used as a means of helping children express or communicate their feelings. It is often said that toys are a child’s words and play is his/her conversation, which sums up the essence of play therapy. Children are often unable to verbalise their feelings like adults; therefore play is the perfect medium by which they can express themselves.
Counselling for adolescents
Adolescent counselling is aimed at young people to help them make sense of their feelings, behaviours and thoughts and entails the use of unique techniques that draw out the expressive nature of a young person. This form of counselling is important in helping guiding adolescents transforming into adulthood and to understand themselves better.
Career counselling for adolescents
Career counselling is useful for grade 7 primary school learners who have to choose between an academical or technical high school. It is also useful for grade 9 high school learners who are in the process of choosing their grade 10 to 12 subjects. Career counselling is especially beneficial for grade 11 and 12 learners who are unsure of their future career choice.
