I was doing my own income tax returns since I've been 18 years old and I started doing a few friends returns for them at no charge (when you could get 20 free returns per year with certain tax software) and they convinced me to start up.
I do not expect my clients to come to me! I come to them (I'm mobile), pick their information up from them, do their tax return, and return their information along with copies of their tax returns. Same for my bookkeeping clients, I come to them to gather their information.
If you are not in my local area, we can accept your information from multiple online sources. PDF files can be secured with a password, among other secure software packages capable of sending information encrypted.
I wear a mask to the door of the client that I'm picking up the information from. When a client contacts me to pick up their information I ask them to place it in an envelope and when I get there I ask them to place the envelope on the rail of their deck (on the ground) so I can pick it up away from them. When I return their information to them (along with copies of their tax returns) I place it in a bag and place it on their doorknob of the front door (only if they are home), ring the bell (or knock), and move back from the door until the client grabs it from the door. If they are not home I drop it off when they are.
