Kickstart a healthier lifestyle

The food we eat plays an enormous part in our health and wellbeing. It’s a core part of leading a healthier life. Nutritionists are experts in helping you make practical steps towards improving your nutrition. They can create a structured meal plan to help you stay on track to becoming a healthier you. It’s not just recipes though. They can offer expert tips and tricks to keep you on the straight and narrow.

Harness the power of nutrition to achieve your sporting goals. You might be training for a marathon, or looking to increase lean muscle mass. Whatever your needs are, a sports nutritionist can help you stay fuelled for every workout and recovery.

Tailored to you

If you suffer from allergies or have special dietary requirements, a professional can ensure that you get your vital nutrients. If you have a medical condition, such as Crohn’s Disease, a registered dietician can assess your condition and provide specific advice. With their expertise, you’ll be able to create exciting meal plans that help manage your medical condition.

What’s the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist?

Registered dietitians are qualified to assess, diagnose and treat dietary problems or nutritional needs. They also tend to help clients with special dietary requirements or medical conditions. To be a dietitian, you’ve got to be registered with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC). Many dietitians work within the NHS as opposed to privately, although you can still find private dietitians to help advise you on your eating habits. Whereas nutritionists are more likely to be the ones advising on weight loss or sport nutrition. Nutritionists can be registered with the UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists (UKVRN), but they don't have to be.

What qualifications do you need to be a nutritionist?

To become qualified as a nutritionist, I had to complete a course run by the UKVRN. After completing the course, I became qualified as a registered nutritionist. This means that all my clients can check my qualifications and experience online. Clients can therefore be confident in my abilities, as they know that I'm qualified under a trustworthy organisation.

What’s the most common reason why clients come to you?

Weight loss is the most common reason that new clients come to me. They often find it difficult to know how to get the right nutrients into their diets without feeling hungry or unsatisfied. But over the last few years, I’ve had more and more people coming to me with IBS-related issues. I think that's because more people are recognising the symptoms of IBS and are getting diagnosed. They then come to nutritionists or dietitians for guidance on how to alter their eating habits to help relieve their symptoms.

I can’t speak highly enough of the exceptional care and support I’ve received from Kate at Food deFined. I’ve struggled with histamine intolerance and reacting to so many foods, she provided not only expert guidance, but also genuine compassion. She also played a key role in helping me understand the underlying factors contributing to my symptoms, including explaining the role of a recently discovered gene mutation. Her ability to connect the dots between complex issues and symptoms to provide advice that has been consistently thoughtful, personalised, and effective has supported me immensely. She has helped me to gradually reintroduce foods, reduce symptoms, and regain a sense of stability with my health. Thanks to Kate, my health has improved significantly, and I now have a renewed sense of hope and confidence in managing my body. I'm so grateful to have found a health practitioner that actively cares and has always made me feel supported every step of the way.

As a first-time mum now working full time with a toddler, I really struggled to get back on track with healthy eating. I had let go of myself since giving birth, and I knew I needed to start investing in my health—not just for me, but for my little family too. Working with Ana has been such a game-changer. She helped me slowly and sustainably lose weight, and more importantly, guided me in creating a “new normal” when it comes to food and lifestyle. It wasn’t about quick fixes or crash diets, but small changes that actually stick. What I love most is that Ana doesn’t just focus on weight—she also talks about the importance of sleep, how to read nutrition labels, and even shares easy recipes I might enjoy. She’s been such a supportive part of this journey, and I’m so grateful for her guidance.

Peter helped me through some of my most challenging times. His holistic approach and attention to detail, allowed me to completely transform my life and most importantly clear that unwanted brain fog. I’ve never felt more positive in years and my life is manageable and meaningful. With three kids and dealing with a recent divorce, I’m glad that I dedicated myself to his program and only wished I done it earlier. They say ‘your health is your greatest wealth’ so I decided to take account for myself in order to manage my life and it’s worked through Peter. Our weekly Zoom meetings are done at your leisure and keep me accountable for my progress which I enjoy and I’ve reached many goals in a short amount of time. I can’t thank him enough personally and would recommend him for anyone who wants to take action for themselves.

Dietitians are the only health professionals regulated and protected by law. Registered Nutritionists can provide evidence-based advice and information about food and healthy eating. Nutritional therapists provide alternative treatment, based on the idea that the body needs 'healing' and 'correcting'.

  • Credentials - Find a specialist that has the credentials to support your personal needs.

  • Experience - Ask how long your Dietitian or Nutritionist has been practising and look up their background.

  • Gimmicks - Check your specialist is not supporting an unsuitable diet brand or supplement.

  • Right fit - Make sure they are upfront in the areas they specialise in and are able to make referrals if your needs are outside their comfort zone.

The minimum requirement for a Dietitian is a degree in Dietetics or a related science degree with a postgraduate diploma or higher degree in Dietetics. Nutritionists should have attended a course which is accredited by the Association for Nutrition (AfN).

Before you choose either a Nutritionist or a Dietitian, you could read testimonials and read reviews on their website. You could also look at their profile page on Bark and read reviews from past customers too.
