Doctor Nagpal, Psychiatrist and Psychoanalyst

My specializations: Addictions to cannabis, alcohol, drugs, nicotine.... Addictions to sex, gambling, shopping.... Obesity, Bulimia, and Anorexia. I am a specialized lacanian psychoanalyst and psychotherapist with more than 25 years of experience in treating these conditions. Although I am specialised in these fields, I am also a general psychologist and psychiatrist. I see all kinds of mental conditions: depression, anxiety, lack of confidence, PTSD, agoraphobia, sexual problems, school problems, personality problems. I have medical degrees from Oxford and Cambridge and was a Consultant Psychiatrist at the main psychiatric hospital of Paris, St Anne's, and at the American Hospital of Paris. I have been serving the diplomatic and English speaking community of Paris as a psychiatrist, for the last 25 years. I am a Consultant to the American School of Paris and various embassies and international organisations in Paris. For many years now I have been treating patients from all over the world, from New York to Oxford to Singapore, via the internet. In particular, I have many patients in America, where I have deep family connexions and an address in Dix Hills, Long-island, New York. I am trying out this website called Bark, to expand my practice in America. With online therapy, it does not really matter whether the therapist is next door or far away. I have a unique perspective on how to treat eating disorders and addictions. My website site explains in simple terms my approach. http://www.nagpal-psychoanalyst.com/ There is no magic cure in psychological illnesses, but with some work you can be cured in most cases. If you were functioning before your illness, you can certainly be repaired once again. On average, it takes 6-9 months to recover from the conditions I specialize in. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, the majority of my appointments are held via video or telephone. No matter where in the world you are, I can arrange a time that suits the both of us. My usual fee is 150$ per session. In certain cases, it may be higher (addictions, psychosis...). Fees are payable at least one week in advance. A great rule to make you be on time and to do some thinking before the session! If you cancel a session with less than 48 hours’ notice, the session is owed. On average, sessions last approximately 30 minutes. A session can be short or long (15-45 minutes) according to the flow. Please see the Q and A section of this profile on why you should choose me as your therapist.

Why should our clients choose you?

Why should our clients choose you?

I am a psychoanalyst and psychiatrist with 25 years of experience in my field.

To be a good therapist it is not enough to have degrees and diplomas. Nor is it enough to be kind, empathetic and non judgemental. You also have to know about what makes us behave in various strange ways, and not be able to change, control or stop ourselves. For example, there are many things we know we should not do, but we cannot stop ourselves. We know we should not overeat, drink too much, talk to too much, show off, but we cannot stop ourselves. Or we may be timid, cowardly, anxious, depressed and not be able to change. In other words you need to know that the Unconscious software which determines our behaviour is more powerful than our conscious, rational self. And mental illness is due to such faults in our mental make up, our mental software. In most cases, the patient cannot stop his symptoms, however hard he tries. And in most cases, it is not enough to be a kind, gentle, non judgemental listener to cure these symptoms. Something more powerful is going on, which cannot be repaired just by kindness. It needs knowledge of the structure of the personality and a technique of how to change it.

This is why psychoanalysts have to first be psychoanalyzed themselves, in order to see first-hand the nature, strengths and faults of their own psychological machinery, in particular their own oedipus complex. They must see their own hungers and needs from others, including from their patients (Counter transference). This may include the need to love and be kind to everybody! A common trait in therapists, to be overcome, or at least controlled! To avoid a mutual dependence between patient and therapist.

Because the symptoms we meet in mental illness have a cause in a part of the patient to which they does not have access themself. It falls on the therapist to unravel the true cause (of the hunger in bulimia or obesity, the meaning of the anorexia, the reason for the craving for drugs, sweets, attention, the origin of the depression or anxiety....) And when this Unconscious software is slowly analysed, and in my technique, when it is written out and re read, it dissipates. The hard disk can be wiped clean, of certain unhappy childhood days, unhappy relationships, so that you can write a new story, build a new and better person. This is the theory and practice of a psychoanalytical therapy. A rewriting of some of the faulty bits of software, (to do with mother, father, food, body image, potty training, sex, beliefs...) which are producing the symptoms or personality disorder.

It is very different from counselling, CBT and other forms of psychotherapy or psychiatry. These approaches do not have a theory of the Unconscious origins of psychological illness and therefore how to correctly treat them. They do not give weight to the role of mother and father and childhood in our present behavior. For these schools, the symptoms have to be overcome by pressure from the therapist and the will power of the patient. They see the symptoms (addiction, bulimia, anorexia, depression, anxiety...) as "faulty thinking" and try to change them with rational advice, telling you to change things in yourself that you obviously cannot change. Or they consider them to be neurological in origin, to be treated with medication. These are very different approaches to that of a psychoanalytical therapist.

For you to decide what kind of therapy you would like.

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

During this pandemic, all of the appointments in my calendar are teleconsultations only, not office
consultations. I will confirm your appointment, taking into account the time difference between your
city and Paris. I have patients in the UK and America, with no problems. We will start the
teleconsultation by phone. I will come towards you first. We can then continue on Facetime, Whatsapp, Zoom or by telephone.

Payment is made at least one week in advance. If you cancel at the last moment (less than 24h before) the consultation will be owed.
