With online therapy, you can get the help you need from anywhere in the world. You might be wondering how to choose the right online therapist without ever meeting them in person. How does online Therapy work?

Online therapy is very much like traditional therapy, the only real difference is that it takes place through email, telephone, video call, or even text messages. Like traditional therapy, your online therapist will help you to overcome difficult emotions and challenging life circumstances by listening and helping you to develop coping strategies. Whichever type of mental health help you need, Bark has hundreds of trusted online therapy professionals ready to support you in a broad range of specialisms. Just tell us what you need and we’ll put you in touch with the best online therapists.

How much do Therapists cost?

This will vary according to the level of experience and training that the therapist holds.

This will depend on where you live, what level of training your therapist has and what they specialise in (whether they are a counsellor, psychotherapist or psychologist) and also how many years of working experience they have.

Your professional therapist will be able to advise you on the full range of therapies available and will be able to help you select the best one to suit your needs. They will also be able to answer any questions you may have. Use Bark to get free quotes and find a trusted therapist today.

What should I look for in a Therapist?

Each route has its own leading body. For counselling it is the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), for psychotherapy, it is the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP), for CBT it is the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) and for clinical or counselling psychology it is the British Psychological Society (BPS). Each of these bodies accredits courses so make sure to choose an accredited therapist.

Professional counsellor training takes three to five years and can be a diploma or degree level. Qualification requires a minimum number of client hours acquired through a work placement.

You may also want to ask for testimonials of their recent work. You could also look at their profile page on Bark and Bark can show you reviews from past customers who have used their therapy.

What are the benefits of Therapy?

Therapy has repeatedly and consistently helped patients with a whole host of issues. It can help with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety or an eating disorder. Or it can help with an upsetting physical health condition such as infertility, a difficult life event such as a bereavement or a relationship breakdown. It can also be used to tackle difficult emotions such as low self-esteem, anger or sexual identity issues. Therapists also offer couples therapy. Therapists can also help with anxiety issues deriving from the coronavirus.

How do I find the right Therapist?

You need to devote some time to finding the right therapist as the connection you have with your therapist is essential. You need someone who you can trust, someone you feel comfortable talking to about difficult subjects and intimate secrets, someone who will be a partner in your recovery. Therapy will not be effective unless you have this bond, so take some time in the beginning to find the right person.

It is worth talking to a few potential therapists and asking questions. Therapists also have special areas of focus, such as depression or eating disorders. For some issues, such as trauma or PTSD, seeing a specialist is absolutely essential.

Why seek counselling or therapy ? You might be going through changes in your home life, work life, relationships or health. You might be living with uncomfortable feelings like stress, low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, anger, or loneliness. Or struggling with processing trauma or abuse (which includes gaslighting) and unable to talk about this in every day life. Talking to a trained therapist at times like this can help put your life back on track. I can help you understand what’s going on for you right now by providing a confidential place to talk, without any judgement. We can work together at your pace, to understand what you need from counselling and find a way to move forward with life. Life post pandemic, has seen many people turn to therapy for the first time, as it's easily accessible online and people want to change their lives, no longer choosing to live with uncomfortable feelings, patterns of behaviour, jobs or relationships. By combining therapeutic counselling (talking about how we feel) with CBT tools (tools that help change behaviours & negative thoughts), life should begin to feel more balanced and in time, your desired positive changes possible. Sometimes it can be helpful to have a free/ no obligation 30 minute chat about your situation before choosing a counsellor, so feel free to send me a message to organise a time. My special Bark offer rate is £40 per session available online only. I am insured to work with adults over 18 years old only. I have a special interest in working with anxiety, low self-esteem, depression, negative thoughts, emotional abuse and improving life direction.

a professional

What do you love most about your job?

After an unexpected event in my twenties, I discovered the benefits of talking to a professional, and went on to qualify as a counsellor. I know how important it is to feel understood , without judgement when we are feeling vulnerable. Being able to provide a professional, safe space to talk and help people understand their problems, so that they can find a way to move forward comfortably at their own pace and in their own unique way is very important to me.

What inspired you to start your own business?

Before the pandemic, I had been working face to face in a counselling room with all of my clients. The pandemic changed this. Moving to online and telephone counselling was the only way to keep connected with my clients. I have since had experience working with an agency that sent me clients from all over the UK, and realized that post pandemic clients are keen to continue to connect online for ease of access, convenience and comfort.

Working with Zac was great!, from walking in feeling lost and flat it was amazing how the work we did brought me out on the other side. I now feel i can go into everyday prepared and aware of my mind and how to use the tools to control it.

5 stars just isn't enough for how amazing Catherine is. I saw a few therapists before her and I just couldn't bond with any of them. I was recommended Catherine and the moment I met her I just knew she was the perfect therapist for me. She made me feel safe and I felt like I could really open up to her. She doesn't judge or make you feel silly - she's fab! I couldn't recommend her enough. I know if I ever need her in the future her door is always open. Thank you Catherine, for absolutely everything you've done for me.

I've just completed my 3rd session with John and am feeling so confident within myself that anyone else's opinions or influences have taken a back seat to my life's decisions going forward. The turn around from being compliant and indecisive to having the self-esteem to think for myself and be happy doing that, is testament to the power of this therapy. I recommend having more than one session as the depth of change built up from the insights during the previous ones. Thank you John and RTT.
