I am a classically trained Opera/Music Theatre performer, having worked in all fields of the entertainment industry, opera and musicals at home and abroad, film and television, pantomime and music hall. I have been teaching for many years now, and (touch wood!) have not yet lost a voice. I am a professor of singing at TrinityLaban Conservatoire on the Musical Theatre BA Degree course, and many of my past students have carved out successful careers in both opera and music theatre, and they still come and see me for a check up.

I have had the privilege and pleasure of taking lessons with Simon Masterton-Smith and I can confidently say that his teaching style is both exceptional and effective. As a teacher myself and a former learner of other disciplines, I greatly admire his ability to tailor his teaching to the abilities and goals of his students. The precision with which he imparts just the right amount of information ensures students aren't overwhelmed, a clear indication of his mastery over the subject and methodology to teach it. What is even more commendable is his genuine encouragement, always highlighting my strengths and guiding me constructively. His ability to accompany lessons on the piano adds another layer of depth to the learning experience. It is evident that he comes with a vast reservoir of knowledge about music and experience on stage, yet his teaching approach is impressively natural and simple. When it comes to singing, emphasis on support and making good technique feel intuitive is something I truly appreciate. Beyond his technical expertise, his cheerful demeanour and amiability make each lesson a joy and create an environment of trust where artistic creation can thrive. He achieves this while maintaining a high degree of professionalism and consistently challenging me to reach new heights. I cannot recommend Simon enough, as he will accompany you on a journey that will lead to great enjoyment of signing.

It felt like serendipity that I found Sandra when I did. I'm not a 'singer' as such so I never thought singing lessons were really for me. But, like a lot of people, singing is actually a big part of my life. I sing throughout the day in the background, I sing with my daughter, I sing along in the car, at family parties. But it has always been marred with the evaluative school trauma which made me so self conscious (even when I was alone) that I could never really enjoy it.
While going through a rough period with my mental health, I decided that singing could be really useful in helping me to recover if I could just enjoy it. I booked a lesson with Sandra and never looked back. My only goal was really for singing to feel more natural and enjoyable. Within a few months I’ve achieved that for sure. But beyond that I've gotten SO much out of our lessons. My voice feels like a brand new instrument and I’m loving trying it out on all the same old songs I’ve been singing for years. Even after a few lessons the difference was already night and day (I checked with my husband and he confirmed I wasn’t imagining it!). There are notes that sound good now that were always strained as well as entirely new notes I’ve just never been able to use before. I can sing with an element of ease and fun, which is a completely new feeling for me.
Besides all that, she is just an absolute joy to work with and be around. So THANK YOU Sandra! What you do is truly incredible.

Hi there! James here. I'm a passionate, personable and creative music teacher with a PGCE in Secondary Music from the Institute of Education at UCL, and a Music Degree with 1st Class Honours from the University of Manchester. I play trombone, guitar, piano and I sing, and I write music for picture (using Logic Pro X) too. I grew up with parents both working as music teachers and choral conductors, and all five of us children played at least two instruments, so I've experienced the full range of what it means to learn music.
