Q&As

Escape routes and fireproofing must be put in place.
Moisture proofing and good ventilation is essential.
Floor, wall and loft insulation is required.
Soundproofing will be necessary
Consider Electric & Heating before you start

Making sure the walls and roof are sound.
Floor slab – the existing floor may need to be levelled, damp-proofed and insulated.
Infilling the door – Most garage conversions simply brick up the garage door.
Wall insulation.
Roof insulation.
Windows & doors.

The main 'pinch-point' with loft conversions can be summed up in a single word - headroom. To see whether your loft makes the grade, simply stand under the highest point of the roof, usually in the centre of the loft, and check whether there is at least 2.8m clear vertical space.

The roof space is inspected for suitability, An architect or surveyor will confirm suitability and create plans, The loft is cleared and prepped, Rewiring and Heating is assessed, New floor joists fitted, Floors are insulated, Floorboards laid, Rafters reinforced, Dormers or Rooflights installed whichever applicable, Staircase fitted, Dormers tiled and vents fitted, Windows fitted in dormers, The roof is insulated, Partition walls erected, Wall plates and first fix, Electrics upgraded, Access panels for water, electrics and eaves storage, Walls are plasterboarded and architrave/skirting fitted, Bathrooms clad and extraction fitted, Second fix - heating and finishes and last decorating and furniture.
