Rosewood Tutoring Solutions

A little introduction; I am an online tutor with just over a year's experience and teach primarily on KS3 English and GCSE English Language and Literature but am now also tutoring students for the 11+ entrance exams in English, creative writing, verbal reasoning, and non-verbal reasoning. In addition, I tutor A-Level psychology and can also offer KS3 & GCSE history lessons. I have a 2:1 BA Hons degree in History from Bristol University, and A-Level's in English Literature, history & psychology. I hold a full enhanced DBS and have taken several safeguarding courses. My approach is to focus on developing the key skills required: in English these are comprehension, inference, analysis, subject terminology, comparing texts, and critical evaluation and I often use resources from the Times Educational Supplement website which are peer-reviewed. I work with each student individually and focus on the skills they require, helping students to understand what is required of them for each assessment objective, breaking them down into a plan they can apply in the exam, and providing lots of practice questions. It is a highly individual and tailored approach with personalised lesson plans created for each student. As tutoring is a unique one-to-one relationship, it is very important that the student and tutor feel comfortable working together, so I always offer a free 30 minute trial for each prospective student.

What do you love most about your job?

Helping students to gain self-confidence in their own abilities, engaging with them in interesting debates and discussions, being more than just a tutor of information, but an advocate of learning and knowledge for both personal and academic development.

What inspired you to start your own business?

After many years in the corporate world (IT & finance) I wanted to do something where I could make a difference, however small. I began by volunteering as a tutor with two different charities, one was teaching English Language GCSE to students who needed additional support and the other was teaching general English to refugees. I found it such a rewarding experience that I was inspired to start up as a self-employed tutor, and currently work freelance for a social initiative enterprise offering tutoring to students from disadvantaged backgrounds. I still volunteer with both charities.

Why should our clients choose you?

I don't have a formal teaching background, therefore I can approach subjects with a different perspective, whilst understanding the fundamental concepts that students require, such as the ability to comprehend and infer information, to be able to analyse and question, to be logical, and above all to be able to communicate. I aim to use interactive approaches and include discussion and reasoning, introducing multi-subject material such as history, philosophy, and psychology into English lessons, or current affairs and sociology into psychology lessons for context and a wider perspective.

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

I use Zoom for all online lessons and find this is a good interactive medium. I also send any resources used to students for their own use.

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

All lessons are online, therefore present no Covid-19 risk
