My photography has really gone to the dogs. I specialize in pet photography, family portraits and commercial, lifestyle photography. I create exciting and engaging photos that my clients love. In this digital age of being overwhelmed with images sliding past, I create work that people hang in their homes to remember how important this time of their lives are.

Fred is very talented and was able to totally capture the spirits of our two super sweet rescue dogs. One of our dogs was very afraid of the flash from the camera. Fred was extremely patient with her. He took the time to completely change the lighting and camera set up so as to eliminate the need for the flash. We never felt rushed. He made us feel comfortable and we had fun. It was tough to narrow down the choices, but I ended up ordering a portrait of each of them printed on aluminum, along with a digital file of the two of them together, looking adorable with tinsel wrapped around them, to use for Christmas card photos. So far everyone who has seen their portraits has commented on how beautiful they are. We’re thrilled to have these exceptional portraits of our fur babies. Highly recommend! More...

Fred did a wonderful job on photos for my business web page and social media. He listened thoughtfully to details about my business and made great recommendations to accomplish what I was wanting to convey. We incorporated my dogs into one of the business shots and also took pictures for their portrait. Fred and his assistant genuinely love dogs and patiently handled them and got some amazing shots. Excellent shots and great fun! More...

I emailed Fred for a photo session after one of dogs was diagnosed with lymphoma and wanted to pictures while she was feeling good. Fred got us in for a session very quickly and was GREAT with my dogs, including one that is picky with people. We never felt rushed and he captured beautiful keepsakes of my dogs. We choose a couple prints and metal prints and they arrived so very quickly. Fred is a true professional and a great artist! I would highly recommend Fred Levy! More...

My mom is extremely close with her dog who is getting on in years, and for my mom's birthday I wanted to do something really special. Fred took some incredible pictures of Leo. Leo is a difficult dog to work with but Fred made the whole process easy and fun, and took the time trying different back drops and lighting to get the best photos possible while effortlessly accommodating Leo's special needs. The toughest part was narrowing down the pictures! In the end I ordered two phtos and my mom loved them! I'm already planning another photo session with my cats! More...

I saw this regarding the BLACK DOG BOOK and I wrote to Mr. Levy about MY black dog, Maggie. Within a couple of days he wrote back, and told me how much he enjoys hearing from those of us that are OWNED by BLACK DOGS. My girl is 1 of the most amazing animals that I've ever had the pleasure of knowing let alone loving. Thank goodness for Mr. Levys attention and wonderful book about these amazing animals that for some strange reason are so often sadly bypassed, hopefully it will make people think before turning their backs just because a dogs black! We recently moved to the Boston area and I heard about Fred from his portrait work with Pawsh Dog Boutique and Salon. Instead of just having a photo of our pet, I wanted to also incorporate the entire family. I explained to Fred my vision for the shoot based on previous family photos that departed from the norm and my hope to have photos taken in iconic Boston locations. We covered Beacon Hill and the Fenway area. We got amazing photos of the entire family and the most adorable photos of Wrigley, our goldendoodle. Not only was Fred calm and good humored, he moved quickly and adeptly to get several great photos all under two hours as family members had to catch planes and get to work. Quickly after the shoot, we had a reveal at the house. He selected the best photos for us to review, set up a screen and projector in our family room and revealed his work to many exclamations of excitement from parents and children! He then helped us select photos using some great tools to mimic how they would look on the walls, he framed the photos and then hung the finished products in our home. From start to finish, he serviced all aspects of the process with creativity, patience, kindness, and professionalism. We are already putting our thinking caps on for our next shoot and how we will try to top the fabulous keepsakes he created! Thanks for sharing your talent with us Fred! My family feels lucky to have made a new friendship with you just months since moving here! More...

Fred did an amazing job taking photos of our family this past summer. We initially started working with him because we wanted some special photos of our dog and he went above and beyond that initial scope to get some wonderful, priceless shots of everyone. He has a very high touch approach to his work and came back with different framing and wall hanging options for us and then took care of all the details to get the photos framed and hung on the walls. I'd highly recommend Fred to anyone looking to have special photos taken! More...

Fred Levy is a master of the art. We had the most incredible experience with him. Our puppy is a bit hyperactive and hard to keep still, yet Fred was super patient and diligent and was able to precisely capture the essence of Toby. I have been a wedding photographer for 24 years but I have never been able to take my own dogs. They love their mom so they run to me. I found Fred through a a mutual friend and to be honest I had pretty low expectations. I knew Fred would be great but my two greyhounds are not great out of their comfort zone. I was amazed at how the dogs responded and the images I have are incredible. I have three 20 x 30 canvas prints hanging in my living room. Sadly two weeks after the session my boy Tucker passed away. I am so thankful to have those images of him. We are waiting for spring to have our new girl photographed by Fred. I know they will be beautiful! More...

Meeting Fred Levy was a special stroke of luck. Like anyone who has a dog, especially a black dog, we think he is a member of the family. Our dog Bing was a rescue lab/terrier or something like a terrier. He has an unusual beard for a lab. This only makes him more special. Fortunately for us, Fred has taken on a crusade to restore the dignity of black dogs with his black dog project. You only have to look at his pictures to see he has a gift for bringing out the best in the dog's features. He is like an Ansel Adams of the dog whisperers. Bing took to him immediately and his patience had a very special influence on Bing. More than anyone I have met Fred has a gift for bringing out the real character of the dog and conveying his compassion for their place in the family.Fred thanks for bringing out the character of Bing in your pictures. What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?
There are three things that are important for me to get a great photo. First is a good connection to my client. I want to make them feel comfortable so I can create the best mood for the photo. For pets, it includes lots of treats and toys. For people, it can be more complex, depending on their needs. Showing some kind of emotion is most important and I work with them to bring that out. Second is good lighting. Whether outside or in a studio, I want to control the light so even for outside sessions, I always bring extra light (and a walking light stand when possible). The third is a great location. I can do good studio shots but I find location shoots offer the most excitement when creating work. Put these three things together, and I can create some amazing photos.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
Questions I often ask depends on the type of job. Family portraits are often about showing the best in their family. That means I need to know what’s really important to them. Do they have favorite places they go to. What is going on in their lives now that they want to remember 10, 20, 30 years from now?
Commercial work is a whole other process. They want to promote their staff or service that will make the best impact. I create work to show them off they way they need to get the most out of the session.
What do you love most about your job?
I’m a lifestyle photographer who loves working with people and pets. People who love their pets have an understanding that life is bigger than themselves. When I get to spend quality time creating work for people and their pets, I get the most out of my day. I love the photography process but when I get to do it with people and their pets, there is nothing better.
What inspired you to start your own business?
My dog Toby inspired me to focus on pets. My background in photography is from a fine art perspective. It wasn’t until we adopted our dog, Toby that I fell in love with the process of photographing dogs. I started researching and found out there is a thing as a pet photographer so I started focusing on that. After years of work and promotion, I’ve carved out a little process and following my work. Now I’ve expanded my process beyond pets but I try to keep that as my focus. If it weren’t for my dog, I might have never done so much.
Why should our clients choose you?
I was asked recently about what kind of photographer I wanted to be. My response was “a nice photographer”. I know there are lots of great photographers out there but not as many are nice. I don’t want to come off as self-important or rude. I want people to feel that I’m working my tail off to create amazing work for them and that they are getting 100% from me from beginning to end of the process. Shooting is such a small part of the photography process and I want my clients to know that I can help from the first hello to the delivery of the final product.
