What do you love most about your job?

Therapies on Thames are a private rehabilitation company helping people overcome difficulties with daily activities. We promote safety, dignity, quality of living and independence in homes, nursing homes and hospitals.

What inspired you to start your own business?

The NHS is struggling to cope with the high number of elderly patient’s admitted to hospital. One of the long term problems is providing the right social support needed to get people home who have often lost their independence after a period of sickness in hospital. The main objectives are first to get the client home as soon as possible, once they are medically fit and secondly to make sure they have suitable support, once at home. This usually involves a home visit by an Occupational Therapist and a social worker. The client then has to wait for the care package to start. In most cases the level of rehabilitation is slow and limited due to large waiting lists and a lack of resources and investment in the community rehabilitation service.
Therapies on Thames (TOT) was set up in 2012 to give people a choice so that they do not have to wait for long periods of time before being treated at home. The age group who can least afford to wait for rehabilitation is the elderly. The sooner an elderly person receives the right kind of therapy to strengthen their muscles and regain their confidence and mobility, the better the outcome. It goes without saying that early intervention also improves people’s level of independence.
Private hospitals do not like to keep people in hospital for long periods of time as they need the beds for patients who are booked in for procedures. So there are very few options in place for people who need more rehabilitation at their own pace, other than to go home and get private care and come back to hospital for outpatient rehabilitation.
