What do you love most about your job?

I love working outdoors in all kinds of environments. I love that we here in Spokane where we have a challenging climate, where winters are very cold and wet, and summers being very dry and hot - and figuring out which plants maintain food production, aesthetics, AND are easy to maintain is a passion. I love seeing people get excited about their yards, which can be so much more than just another chore in our already hectic lives.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I spent much of my childhood visiting my great grandmother's farm in Milton Freewater, OR (adjacent to Walla Walla, WA and amazing farmland), and seeing how they lived simply - with dairy cows and chickens, numerous other farm animals, orchards, and organically grown produce. I have memories of stuffing my jacket full of apples to bring home to the city and eating blueberries with cream still warm from milking. This was a magical time for me and I carry these memories today.

In grade school, I enjoyed maintaining a small vegetable patch, helping my family with yard work, and eventually this all lead to an appreciation for food that was exceptional: the culinary arts. In 2003, I graduated with a culinary arts degree, but after working for several years in that industry, I wasn't happy. I went back to school for a small business degree, experienced personal tragedy and health problems. I turned to my own yard for soothing my struggles. A single vegetable patch turned into many; I educated myself on how best to combine plantings, how to fill in gaps, how to increase the health of my existing environment and get more out of the small city lot that I have. All this lead me to permaculture.

I reached out to a local flower farmer (for volunteer work to try to satisfy what was still missing in my life). This flower farmer put into perspective what I already knew: friends, family, and neighbors had been getting my help and advise already, why not spread my experience to others outside of my social circle? Becoming That Plant Gal has allowed me freedom to help others make their yard into what they can manage, to what they can grow to increase their health, wealth, and in ways that benefit the Earth.

Why should our clients choose you?

Clients should choose me because I am capable, creative, and passionate about gardening in a sustainable way. I've seen what a small city yard can do for my own well-being and I'm ready to help others create their own piece of paradise.
