Got a puppy, a rescue from Kentucky. Never had a puppy before and boy was she a handful. Hired Daniel from Shelby and he was awesome.  Really knows his stuff and after 3 sessions, Darla (the dog) is really behaving and listening to me and I feel so much safer taking her to the park. Daniel made it so easy. He answered every question and concern and followed up with notes and instructions. It's funny, when you get a new dog, everyone gives you advice. Don't listen to them! Listen to Daniel!! He's got a license and everything.  Wish I could give more stars. More...

I signed my dog up for private 1:1 lessons since he was getting bored around the house and picking up naughty barking habits from the next-door neighbor's dog. I booked Daniel who was absolutely AMAZING with my corgi. Not only did Daniel make my dog comfortable from day 1, but he also worked on reducing his reactive barking and even taught him how to "clean up" his toys! I didn't even know my dog was capable of such complex behaviors, but the fact that Daniel actually taught him is a testament to his talent and skill as a trainer. If you have any animal that needs training, Daniel is your man. He is professional, prompt, and very responsive via email or text. My dog really loved him and that's saying a lot because he's picky about strangers entering the apt.I also wanted to compliment Shelby's other training classes. We did the loose leash walking class with Frankie and had a blast. Overall, I recommend Shelby Semel's dog training 100%! More...

We took our English Bulldog puppy to socialization classes a few years ago, and it was the best! It helped him get acclimated to dogs and learn how to play well with others (an added bonus was that he was always completely exhausted after class giving us some much needed rest! ). He's now 4 and over the pandemic developed reactivity towards dogs, which has been an extremely frustrating problem given we just moved back to the city and live on a high floor in an elevator building. We contacted Shelby and worked with Victoria on our dog's reactivity. After two sessions, he is so so much better! I no longer panic every time I need to take him in the elevator or when turning corners, and he hasn't reacted in almost two weeks which I never would have thought possible. Thanks so much to Victoria who gave us the tools we needed to manage this - feels like night and day! More...

We signed up for a leash training session for $85. Immediately after receiving confirmation that this session would be virtual over Zoom, we cancelled and asked for a refund. It has been 6 months and no refund. I was finally able to get Shelby on the phone after months of voicemails and she told me that there are no refunds and that she sent us the "notes" from the virtual class. Do not use this company. They are thieves and I would never trust my dog around someone like this. If I could give them 0 stars I would. More...

I cannot recommend Shelby Semel Dog Training enough. Daniel has truly helped give me the necessary skills to work with my high energy Cavapoo. She went from demand barking at me constantly to this pretty much not even being a problem anymore. Daniel is so personable and friendly. I truly enjoy each session with him and I know Jolene absolutely adores him! In just a few sessions Daniel has already helped give me the skills the work with Jolene and I have seen such a huge improvement in her. More...

We've worked with Frankie with our goldendoodle Biscuit, and we couldn't be more happy about the way things are going.  From the minute she arrived, Frankie changed the energy and the way we approached training in general.  The techniques are simple and clear, and our dog responded immediately to them.  We're looking forward to a long relationship this group.  They're great humans. (Biscuit thinks so too!) More...

We've had a great experience working with Frankie Banaag to train our puppy Jackson! We've had private sessions both in person and on Zoom now that we moved out of the city. Frankie is extremely knowledgeable and has been a great resource for us to lean on as first time puppy owners. After each session, she sends us notes to recap what we talked about so it's easy to refer back when we forget any of the details we discussed. We were worried Zoom training may be too difficult but it's proven to be great and we highly recommend it.We've also done an online workshop on impulse control with Laura Folsom which was very helpful and informative. This is a review for Frankie Banaag.  Dog Trainer Extraordinaire!I recently got a Golden Retriever puppy, Theo.He is currently 4. 5 months old.Although I have had dogs in the past, it has been awhile and  felt I could use some help!  I was referred to Shelby Semel Training through a close friend that got the name from her vet. They have a much different approach to the trainers I have used in the past.  It is all based on positive reinforcement.Frankie comes for in person training once a week. She has a very easy going, calming personality .  She works with Theo, myself and my 2  kids in order to make sure we are all on the same page. She follows up on every session with an email recap and instructions that I constantly refer to because it is a lot of information to take in and remember!Theo loves the "treat lady" and although he definitely is on his best behavior when she is there, he is doing quite well with us too!He learned his basic commands very quickly.  We are currently working on day crating, leash walking/running, begging and boundaries.Hoping she is able to help out with his new found love of toilet paper and I will challenge her to train both Theo and my kids to put their "toys" away! That may take longer for my kids than Theo :)Highly recommend Frankie. Laura and Leslie have transformed my pup and I couldn't speak more highly of the classes and private training sessions. Starting with Laura - we started virtual training after I had Brodie for a few months and had no idea what I was doing! As a first time dog owner, I was skeptical of virtual training but it was amazing! It was particularly helpful for all of the basic commands, and some tricks - along with follow-up sessions for random things that come up! Laura is so patient and creative with techniques specific to your pup and will always find a solution to anything! She is so much fun to work with and super responsive all the time. If you are questioning virtual training -- I really recommend giving it a try. Turning to Leslie - after realizing I really needed some hands-on in person help to supplement the virtual trainings, we signed up for the Canine Good Citizen prep & test class and after the first class I was sure Brodie would fail but we'd make the best of it anyway. As the class went on, after a lot of personal attention (for all pups in the class!) Brodie has passed the practice test! Leslie also has so much patience and passion for her job - we had so much fun learning that we signed up for another class with her! Leslie really gets to know each pup's needs and personalizes the class to set everyone up for success in different ways. Before I started training with SSDT I viewed training as a burden that I wanted to get through quickly. Now I look forward to seeing Laura and Leslie and learning more with Brodie. There's always more to learn and improve and I look forward to working with them for a long time to come, both virtually and in person!  Thank you so so so much!!!! More...

We loved our Puppy Kindergarten class with Jenna. She is a phenomenal, knowledgable, and very personable teacher. Even though the class was full of puppies and their parents, Jenna gave personalized attention to each family.  She got to know each dog very well and did a great job of socializing the dogs while pointing out what owners should notice about their puppy's behavior. We learned many skills and each week she provided notes via email for us to refer back to. She is truly a wealth of information. Recently we have begun private sessions with Jenna to help brush up on some skills and to get help with separation anxiety coming out of the pandemic. We are so grateful that we met Jenna and learned about Shelby Semel Dog Training when our pup was so young. More...

Totally worth it. We've been working with Emily in private sessions to get our aussie puppy trained up. Her expertise is amazing and she's a pleasure to work with. We've got a much better behaved little dog thanks to her. I watched a lot of videos and tried to train on my own at first but it was a lot harder irl and Emily always has a trick up her sleeve to get our smart, stubborn little pup to behave. Highly recommend! More...

I was disappointed with the beginner puppy class. The classes consistently started late and ended early, the trainer frequently forgot to email the training homework until 1-3 days before the next class, and the playtime with the puppies was very stressful. The entire set up was not very welcoming or realistic for a group of 4 month old puppies.  They were technically more affordable than their competitors, because it was 6 classes for $350, but I would not sign up for them again and would happily pay $350 for 4 sessions with a different service.  It is absolutely possible that other courses are wonderful, but we will not find out because we have signed up with a different trainer and are having a significantly better experience.
