May 1, 2020 By Ahmed Sirleaf Peace Be Still, Limited Liability Company (LLC): “Anxiety & Covid-19 and Mental Health Resources”, and I dare say, Services. In times like these, it is natural to turn to people who are experts in their fields for help. As the world battles with the novel-Coronavirus and the disease it causes, Covid-19, nations have turned to their best scientists, medical doctors, nurses and public health officials for solutions. While science or medicine is a universal discipline, cultural nuances and contexts matter in providing local, regional or national relief for pandemics or crises of any kind. In the case of COVID (2019), people do not just fear getting infected. Alas, they suffer tremendously from its accompanying consequences. Be it the fact that our world civilization has come to a crushing halt from the impacts of this virus. Be it the fact people are experiencing devastating economic pains: from job losses to housing insecurity, threats to food and nutrition, the propensity of a catastrophic economic depression to the closure of commerce and industry, the closure of schools and our places of worship, we just cannot enumerate this global enigma. Threats to our livelihoods and our very existence-people are scared and anxious. This is not to mention the so-called physical or social distancing—being unable to be with one’s loved ones or social connections. Nay our children are unable to be in school to learn, grow and be with their friends. Children and families enduring anxieties and stress from these palpable uncertainties. You know the impacts you are feeling all too well, unfortunately. For our local immigrant communities in Minnesota and elsewhere, our question has been how we would navigate all this and keep our sanity intact until a relief is in sight. So, one day a few weeks ago, I got a random invitation to join a Facebook Live event. Granted, I usually am one who is careful about watching or following live events. But this one seemed different. Behold it was Tanya Yardea Young with her Peace Be Still, LLC. I had seen this organization’s name before—when I first did, it seemed like it was a new business start-up of some sort—hence I was enthralled to the title: “Wellness Wednesday: Anxiety & Covid-19 and Mental Health Resources.” I checked it out! Watched it; followed the event to the end— since then I have never stopped looking forward to Ms. Young’s Wellness Wednesday sessions. I had met Tanya at a fundraiser dinner event two years ago. She came across a consummate professional. I must say I really did not know her background or training. I did not know what she did for a living nor did it matter at the time. Despite my illiteracy about her background, I still reckoned at that first meeting, as we had shared a table, that she was a trained mind. Urbane, calmed and polished. She approached conversations with a therapist’s curiosity and wrap attention yet with non-intrusive quips. Following that first Wellness Wednesday event, oh, I want to say in late March (March 20 or 30?), curiosity got the better of me. I did a cursory read of Peace Be Still, LLC’s Facebook page. From her title I deduced she is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC). It turns out, we have got one of our own, who is an able, experienced mind on psycho-social and mental health concerns. Now I understood why she lurches her talk therapy Wednesdays with such allure of cultural competence and nimble good humor—because she knows the myths, cultural practices, beliefs and barriers that often prevent us from seeking care. The April 29, 2020 edition, which she conducted from her picturesque Lino Lakes backyard, as she informed her audience how her daughter encouraged her therapist mother to utilize some spring sunlight therapy herself, Tanya provided bouts of free counselling sessions for her audience. You can say this review piece is one in gratitude for what I have learned from Tanya in this short period as a parent, coping with questions and conversations with my own children amid Covid-19 Shelter-in-Place and distance learning. If you are looking for a safe space to address mental health and psycho social disorders or concerns, Peace Be Still is worth looking into. Perhaps you can start with the Wellness Wednesday. Tanya exudes a certain depth of knowledge and understanding. I have heard her seamlessly discuss topics such as: mental health and well being; anxieties healthcare professionals face caring for others; religious & cultural Beliefs; coping tips and techniques for adults and children, etc. She has made media appearances in diaspora and immigrant communities on various platforms to educate her people about mental health and self-care. I will submit that Tanya demystifies taboo topics about mental health in language that we understand, still with a nimble good humor. More...
