Will continue to stay here whenever I am in Bellingham for work.  15 min walk to downtown, VERY quiet, secure, and the staff is very helpful. Everything you need, and the price is reasonable, especially considering you aren't staying in the standard, multi-story box of human cages.  Great atmosphere - all new furnishings, clean.  Lots of cool little touches that separates this place from the others. The Heliotrope is a perfect little urban oasis in Bellingham. It's a throwback to the old motels of yesteryear but with a contemporary, clean flair. The bed was super comfortable and they even had a real fire pit going in the evening. Parking is made easy with an assigned spot right outside the door. More...

Great little pet friendly motel - i love the decor and the thoughtful touches. The location was quiet and i enjoyed being more in a neighbourhood, especially to walk the dog. I felt safe and comfortable walking, even in the early morning and late evening. Absolutely lovely and their selection of tea in the lobby was the best. More...

Bare basics. A bit pricey for the accommodations, especially for a weekday, I may have been the only quest. Cute, boutique style, clean, friendly, and well thought through economically and sustainably. Coffee in the   lobby, no in room coffee maker, easy walk to the lobby, no microwave, didn't check the lobby for one. Nice outdoor space. Pet friendly with lots of rules, so not to much. Would stay again, was an easy stay. More...

My husband and I are two retirees from the San Francisco Bay Area, who stayed in Bellingham WA for a week, and we really liked this place. It's an old 1950s American motel that's been very nicely renovated to contemporary European style. So, the whole place is very sleek, chic, and clean, with just what you need and no extra frou-frou to collect dust or get knocked over. Our room had a mini-fridge with an empty growler and an invitation to go fill it up at a local brew pub. No in-room coffeemaker, but bottomless pots in the office. I believe this is some kind of co-op, and all the young people in the office/community space were just as nice as can be. There's a big grassy area in front with seating. Check-in was simple and easy. Room rates are very reasonable. The hotel is located on level ground near downtown and within easy walking distance of a number of watering holes that also serve food. The area feels quite safe. If I were cycling through on a long-distance bike trip, this would definitely be where I'd want to stay. Thank you, Heliotrope, and we'll be back! More...

Booked our second stay here for the RSVP (bike ride) overnight. We had none of the glitches of our first stay, and everything worked our great. From the location (near bike repair shops; near great places to eat; right on the ride route) to the nice size of the room this was an excellent spot. And this time we were farther away from the fire pit, having learned our lesson!  In fact I'm not sure there even WAS a fire that night. More...

This is a funky motel, conveniently located with lots of character. I loved the light in the room, the bathroom with lots of places to put things, the bed that was not hard, the frig, the provided earplugs (it is a motel, so you can hear traffic and the train, but not with the earplugs! ), and the friendly, very helpful staff. A few times a year we pop down to Bellingham. I have stayed at quite a few different ones over the years but wouldn't hesitate to come down here again. Initially, we were allocated room 6, but when we turned up at 7 pm, there was a workman working on the room next door, and the walls are thin. I went to the hub and the lady apologised and upgraded us to Room 2. We eventually got the heater working (there needs to be instructions!) The room is super cute but it is noisy, with road traffic and the occasional train (I personally can't sleep with earplugs in my ear) The only criticism I had is that there was no shower curtain, so we soaked the floor...sorry! I like that you can leave notes on the back of the door in chalk. We will return! More...

We brought our pets, and the hotel was very accommodating to them - there are special rooms set up for those who are bringing their fur babies, so make sure to let the front desk know when making the reservations (its a $27.67 fee, with tax). The rooms are lovely: well-designed and exuding heart, soul and a great sense of aesthetic. The service is friendly, but not over-bearing. The location can't be beat-a lovely walk to downtown Bellingham, and a stone's throw from great neighbourhood coffee and breweries. This is what Bellingham needed: a fantastic alternative to the run of the mill Bellis Fair chains that dominate! We've just stayed in 19 hotels in 5 countries in 23 days and Heliotrope stands out as being particularly nice.  I dealt with three staff members during my brief stay, and all were friendly and helpful and delightful to deal with.  The refurbished motel rooms are very thoughtfully appointed without being aggressively designed. Little touches like the bluetooth speakers for your devices are really nice. The mini-fridge had an empty growler from a very-nearby local brewery that could be filled for $8, and I thought that was really cool, and a great way to involve guests in the community. My loved one grumbled a bit in the morning that we had to go to the reception area for coffee, but it was the end of the very long trip and he was grumbling about lots of stuff at that point. The reception area is great, and anyway personal coffee pots are available for the room on request. There were lots of towels, which you might not appreciate unless you've been in, say, a damp echoey Moroccan hotel with, bizarrely, no towels at all even though towels are specifically advertised, and you can't make anyone understand what you want, so you wind up drying yourself off with a dirty shirt. Thanks for the piles of nice towels, Heliotrope! For reals appreciated. Also and most importantly, the pillows were the most comfy we encountered on this trip. Good for stomach AND side sleeping. And the bed was top 3, easy, for comfort. People never can seem to agree on what makes a bed comfortable but we were pleased and grateful to sink into it. We were strictly visiting family, but if you're visiting Bellingham to see the city you can't do much better for location. It's right by downtown, and close to Fairhaven, too. More...

I hope they let us back cause we really had fun! Huge shout out to Josh who chopped wood, made me a fire...and then my friends were too cold to sit outside. We had 2 joining rooms right outside reception and never lacked for anything. I fully support the individual biz over a chain any day and this place hit the mark. An uber downtown was around $12, little market across the street with great craft beer selection. It's is a residential hood though but we really loved it as a home base. I've already recommended it to work mates to 'support local'. Once our dollar improves I'd LOVE to visit and see more breweries. Due to it's lack of boutique hotels I never thought staying the night in Bham was an option. Now it is.Beds super comfy. Shower was big and powerful.
