We booked a deluxe move and pack service with FlatRate to take us from DC to NYC. Every aspect of it was a horrific.We came to realize that -- no matter how many months in advance you make your reservation -- FlatRate essentially puts out a call for your movers the day before. They heavily operate as a truck dispatch service rather than movers. In our experience, this meant that we almost didn't have any move on our scheduled day. As renters who needed to vacate our apartment and had plans in the new city, this was obviously a complete disaster. As the hours ticked by we stayed on the phine with FlateRate begging for movers to come. They eventually wrangled someone in the evening. It would not have happened without extensive panic and pressure on our part. We were also very lucky that there were movers from another company relatively nearby and willing to take the job that we *thought* we booked with FlatRate.Though we were able to get someone to show up, it was a far smaller crew than we had booked and paid for. They also didn't get there until around 7, over 15 hours after the move was scheduled to start. The result was an intense overnight sprint to pack our house with my wife and I heavily acting as our own movers.We were basically stranded in the middle of the night, had to book a hotel, and leave some things behind.You might think FlatRate is perhaps better in NYC where they are headquartered than they are in other cities. The services they advertise outside of NY are certainly BS and a scam, but they were not good in Brooklyn either. When our two movers showed up to unpack, we and them were promised actual support from FlatRate. It ended up being mostly them, us, and my uncles who unloaded the truck. FlatRate's crew finally showed up about 30 mins before it was all finished. Of course, they angrily expected tips.This is one of the most awful and scammy companies I have ever dealt with. Avoid FlatRate at all costs. Moves are important and stressful. Do not trust yours to these absolute scammers! I have extensive documentation of all of this. We are over the moon happy with the services rendered by FlatRate! Sef and the team, were punctual, courteous, professional, friendly, meticulous in how they wrapped our belongings, and worked very quickly. Their attention to detail impressed us so m much. They treated our things as if they were their own. They set us at ease right away and we were able to leave them to their work and go out for a leisurely lunch with a friend. When we returned they had already finished loading. Their work ethic is commendable. Though our household goods were shipped to another province, they arrived on time and without any damage. The team unloaded a large van in no time and our freshly painted walls were not so much as scuffed. Thank you for the wonderful experience using your company. I wish I could give them less than one star. The different coverage options weren't explained, and they broke my 1,200-dollar sofa that is only a year old. The person assigned to me was super attentive until there was a problem and I asked to file a claim. The movers were smoking the whole time. Even inside the back of the truck with some of our stuff in it, and I don't smoke, I had asthma, but they were nice, so I didn't say anything until after I saw that for my completely unusable 1,200 sofa they're giving me 150 dollars. BEYOND UNPROFESSIONAL, CARELESS DO NOT WORK WITH THIS COMPANYMy husband and I hired Flat Rate to move us from NYC to Miami. From the movers to the customer service to the "claims dept" I give ZERO STARS. The movers were beyond careless in packing our belongings, everything arrived broken. They were throwing things off the truck. Mirrors, marble tables, dressers, a suede chair everything arrived broken or damaged. We were told to submit a claim- we submitted receipts and images of the broken items. The so called "insurance" only covers .60 cents per pound. Damages valued over $25K we are only receiving $1,200. Not only is the appalling and does not cover the cost to replace the items...we are now 2 months since from our move and are getting the run around from the claims dept. that they are "processing" the check. They stopped answering our emails and phone calls. They should be put out of business no one should ever go through what we are dealing with!!!! More...

DO NOT USE! FlatRate completely mismanaged my move from beginning to end. I requested an in person consultation well in advance of my move date. A few hours before my schedule consult, the consultant (David Lloyd) emailed that he could not do an in person consult, but would do it virtually. He assured me that a virtual consult was just as good as the in person one. I was given a quote for a 1 day move. It wasn't the cheapest, but I appreciated that it was a FLAT, FIXED price. I also assumed that, as professionals, they knew what they were doing and could accomplish the move in one day. Long story short, they showed up at 9 am and immediately started complaining that we had more stuff than what they were told. Note that we added one television to the move, one ladder, and some boxes that we thankfully packed ahead of time. They came up with a list of 20-30 additional items that they did not have on their list. This was precisely why we wanted an in person consult--because we wanted it to be accurate. I paid for unpacking service and packing material removal. They immediately began talking about additional funds we would owe. The move took the entire day, such that they ran out of time (my building had a cut off for how long they could use the elevator--of which FlatRate was aware ahead of time), so items were left behind at my old apartment. When they finally finished moving the stuff they did manage to get out of the apartment, it was 9 pm and we had to get our kids to bed, so we told them to leave. Almost nothing was unpacked, so all of the boxes and paper were in our house. The manager that I spoke to told us the movers would come the following day to get the remainder of our stuff out of our apartment and to unpack/remove boxes. Over the course of the day, I had to speak to their headquarters multiple times, as they kept coming up with additional funds. I hired this company because of their flat rate! When I spoke to the company the next day, they stated that they would not send people to collect the boxes/packing materials. We spent the better part of the next day moving the last stuff out of our apartment. They refunded part of the additional funds tho at they charged us after the move began, but they wouldn't discuss refunding more than that, despite the fact that they did not perform their end of the deal. Worst moving experience . I used Flatrate for moving and storing my furniture until my new house was completed. I paid for ‘premium storage’ at its Newark location. 18 month later and 10,000 dollars in storage fees alone, my furniture was delivered. All the furniture was damaged, light fixtures broken and rugs ripped and molded. Driver stated that was the condition it was in when pick up at its Bronx facility. Damages exceeded 40,000 dollars. Moved our apartment with Flatrate. Sales person was great, price was reasonable and we thought we are off to a great experience. Movers were nice guys but totally messed up. They lost one of our chairs, damaged an antique table, as well as damage to some other furniture. Damage was over $500! They gave us 150 and after we appealed gave us another 75. This was hands down the worst experience I've ever had in my life. I booked my move and received both verbal and written confirmation that the move was scheduled and that movers were supposed to arrive today between 9 and 9:30 am. I called Flat Rate at 10 am to get an update on where the movers were and was told there was no record of my move in the system. Despite being able to provide multiple emails documenting confirmation of the move, Flat Rate said they did not have proof of it and were unable to move forward with it. After hours of trying to get them to accommodate my move, they finally said they could send movers at 3 pm. 30 minutes later they called back to say those movers had also cancelled. A trash company run by trash people. They used to be amazing. I decided to use them again on my most recent move. Things thrown into boxes. Everything labeled "books". Items broken. The best part was they took the elevator key to my building and as a result no move ins/outs could happen. So I lost the deposit on my move with my existing building. I thought that clearly they will make it right. Nope. I begged, pleaded, and asked nicely to have the key--which they acknowledged they had--dropped off at my old building. No dice. Avoid this company! The website argues that if you pay through a direct bank account you would get a discount. My agent also added an extra discount. However, I was charged more than what I had agreed to. The move itself was also terrible and some of my possessions suffered damages. This company is complete TRASH. STAY AWAY. Bear with me this is going to take awhile.When I signed up to use their service they told me my stuff would be stored inside a secure warehouse on a pallet with hundreds of other peoples property - which I thought was fine - the likelihood of something happening in that situation must be low right? Without my knowledge my property was kept in an outdoor storage space (think one of those roll up door things). Guess what happens next - a flood at their location which has damaged my property. That was a great call to get.Ok - I bought extra insurance so this will be alright - right? NOPE. Dealing with their claims department has been one of the worst experiences of my life. First of all going out to their actual storage location was VERY eye opening. This is one of the worst places in New Jersey - it looked like a bombed out war zone across the street from the dump. Not the best place to go - not surprising they don't want people coming by (can I add they were an hour late to meet me after they confirmed the time multiple times). But anyways - whatever. They bring up my stuff - tons of it moldy and rotted out but worst of all there was stuff missing. So I take photos/make a list of all the items destroyed (including the missing items) and go about figuring out the value of all of this is. This took A LOT of work but I get it done. It comes out to over $8K. WEEKS later I get an email with their decision - they will pay me $1200. They don't even MENTION the stuff that was stolen (their team even sent me photos of everything when it initially flooded showing those items in their possession). This really broke me. This was everything I've owned for the last 10 years that I had to put in storage during the pandemic and that number is SO far off from the actual value. Many of these things were family heirlooms/mementos etc that cant even be priced and I was merely trying to get the tangible value on them.So - for the last FOUR months I have been trying to get in touch with them to understand how this number can be so low - I get absolutely NO RESPONSE. I don't know how many times I have emailed and called them at this point and it seems their strategy is to just stone wall. Which seems like it could possibly be the most unprofessional way to deal with something like this? In the process now of talking to lawyers.As far as ever recommending this company? Don't do it. From the initial point of contact through the move and beyond, they reached out to make sure our needs were met and to answer any questions. Our Movers were absolutely some of the best. They arrived early the day of the move and were professional, experienced, and friendly. They made sure all of our items were carefully wrapped and protected. This is the third time I use Flat Rate to move and it was the worst experience so far.The crew who came to move us was not good. They kept complaining that we had too many boxes and our furniture was heavy, when you'd expect movers to be well built and able to lift stuff but that was not the case.They tried to put our dining table in the truck without any wrapping to protect it and by the time I caught them in the front yard and insisted they wrap it it had already been damaged in two places.And as my wife was asking them to be careful with fragile items one of them replied to her saying "relax"!!We also paid for packing service but as we unboxed the items in the new place we were not able to find some of our things, notably an expensive bag of my wife's...not to mention that some boxes had items from all over the house, with no logic in packing at all.I am not sure I will be using this company again, given the price tag of the move and the service we received. Do not use this company!! FlatRate broke thousands of dollars worth of property and took zero accountability. Seems to me they are more of a brokerage than a moving company, hiring local day workers with little to no professionalism to move your stuff. They repeatedly tried to increase the price of the move.
