The lunch buffet on the weekend provided a nice variety of chicken, lamb, lentils, and other vegetarian dishes, naan, salad, and deserts.  A cabbage  dish, with mild spices was not familiar to any of us, but we all went back for seconds on that and a couple of other dishes.  One in our party is vegan and found plenty of satisfying dishes,  In short, we won't hesitate to go back whenever we are in Baltimore.. I can't believe I haven't left a review here yet! This is one of my favorite places to get Indian food for a lunch buffet in Mt. Vernon. Honestly, the thing that makes Akbar stand out from the other Indian places in the area is the home-cooked quality of the food. I really like Kumari, too, but the food there is incredibly rich and it tastes more like it was made for an American palette. Akbar is different -- the food tastes cleaner and healthier, so in a way it feels like a more authentic experience, particularly because there are always a lot of vegetarian options. The one caveat is that sometimes the variety is a little lacking. That said, the food is always incredibly flavorful and delicious! I haven't been here for dinner yet but it's definitely on the bucket list. For now, I'd definitely recommend coming her for the buffet. More...

My friends and I ordered delivery from Akbar and I thought it was amazing. I ordered the chicken tikka masala which is a pretty common dish and I think different Indian restaurants make it slightly different. This one tasted more tomato-y than others that I've eaten, but I thought it was great. Their rice was delicious. The naan bread was a little burnt though. Such a great spot in Mount Vernon for lunch or dinner. Akbar is an awesome local Indian food joint that has all sorts of curry dishes as well as breads, tandoori, and more. Their chicken tikka and any of the vindaloos are very good. I would recommend trying a spicy curry-like a vindaloo, and a creamy curry- like korma! They also have a great range of vegetarian and gluten free options, and thus, can accommodate everyone's diet.Better yet, they have an affiliation with Hopkins alumni network that with your Hopkins ID, you can get 10% off! Haven't been for a long time. The Akbar in Columbia closed and the closest one for me is in Randallstown. The Dal Special is one of my favorite Indian dishes and it is well worth driving the extra miles for.

We visited on a Saturday  for the buffet.It was:Warm, cozy, had great food and we received the best reception from a restaurant owner we've had since traveling regularly over three continents: that is really the unabated truth. We're fanatical about taste, texture and seasoning excellence at Indian restaurants...and were not disappointed here at all. In fact, this restaurant had food that sang all three loudly. And did I mention 99.9 percent of the food was  warm/hot (temp) too. The buffet was clean, had many choices and best of all fresh meat. There were no traces of dingy, greyed out dark meat AT ALL. Finally!!Although it needs some updating aesthetically, (paint, lighting, carpet) I'd go again in a minute.We parked right outside the door and enjoyed seeing that the restaurant drew people from diverse backgrounds and families...Well done Akbar! You definitely have something special going on. Kudos to your service team too. Not bad for an indian restuarant with great choices on the menu and alcohol selections. On the outside it looks like it's going to be a super casual restaurant but when you go inside they have white tablecloths and try to make things look fancier. Prices reflect the frou-frou and white tablecloths. They brought out chilled glasses for my beer which was excellent, very impressed (obviously catering to American palate). I got Tandoori Chicken and regular naan, both were tasty. I believe they put sugar in the green bell peppers and onion mixture because they tasted very sweet? The waiter brings it out on a hot sizzling plate and then plates in on my dinner plate. Would have preferred if it were left on the sizzling plate but maybe that was for my safety. It was sadly quiet for dinner time so I'm not sure why. Wow! This is one of jewels of Baltimore. Food was really good and the service was exceptional. Very friendly environment. There were a lot of repeat customers there clearly based on the way staff and customer were speaking on topics . You feel like family here. Definitely worth checking it out. I mean they're open till 11-11:30 PM so what are you waiting for. Solid lunch buffet at an excellent price (just under $10). Wide variety of dishes: paneer, spinach, dal, mixed vegetables, pakora, salad, rice, and naan, as well as two chicken options. We came here for a weekday dinner and loved it! The food tastes amazing, the ambiance is lovely, and the service is impeccable. For a group of four, we shared: chicken sagwala, chicken tikka masala, paneer makhani, and chicken methiwala, as well as garlic naan on the side. I also had a mango lassi. Rice and a starter were complimentary. My favorite dish was the chicken sagwala. It was less creamy and rich than the other dishes we ordered, and I enjoyed the very subtle bitterness of spinach. The garlic naan was great - fluffy and very buttery. The mango lassi had more yogurt than others I've had but yummy nonetheless. The service here was great. When we finished our complimentary starter (not sure exactly what it was - a very crunchy and thin dosa, with chutney), our waiter kindly gave us a second starter, without us asking. Our waters were constantly refilled. We were given more complimentary rice as we progressed through our dinner. When we asked for to-go boxes to pack our leftovers, our waiter had already packed rice into each of our boxes. Great lunch buffet! I went on a Saturday and we were the only people in there for most of our visit. I enjoyed the spread - in particular, the palak paneer, fish, and dal were highlights. Everything was extremely warm and fresh, despite the lack of folks in the restaurant. This is also a good place for vegans, as they had at least 4-5 dishes that my vegan friend could eat. This restaurant has been around for 35 years and it's great.  The people who work there are extremely attentive and very very kind.  I usually go there at night and I can tell you that the vegetarian Thali plate is really good and is big enough that it can be shared with a friend.  The server recommended the Malai Kofta which was delicious and perfect with the garlic naan ! Great lunchtime buffet with on point offerings of Saag Palak and various tofu dishes.  Naan is included in the buffet offering which makes it a great value, although the bread can be a little crunchy at times. I love the ambiance. It's actually feels more like an Italian restaurant, except for the paintings of the Himalayas (and the food, of course). The dining room is a few stairs below street level, but don't be put off by this! It doesn't have a creepy musty basement feeling. It feels cosy and clean like a fancy wine-cellar. Definitely a good spot for a date.I've tried all the Indian restaurants on Charles Street, and this one is probably my second-favorite.If you're looking for the most free papadum and the best sauces to go with it (especially the onion), Akbar is your place. The butter chicken here is the best I've had in Baltimore except for Lumbini (my favorite).Each dish I've ordered was very good and had a rich and delicious flavor profile. Great Indian lunch buffet with a wide selection of both meat and vegetarian dishes. We came here recently for a post-graduation lunch and it was just the perfect thing for our group. They offered chicken tiki masala (my fave), lentils, spinach, curry cauliflower, and much more.
