Metrix Design Ltd

We are a team of three having previously worked together at the same design consultancy many years back. As is the case with most medium to large design consultancies, small projects (which all residential projects fall into) are often pushed back with larger projects winning resources to achieve deadlines for the larger budget projects - it is not uncommon for medium to large firms to have engineers juggle six or more projects at a time with small residential projects drowning between larger hospital refurbishments, commercial developments and new house builds, but at Metrix Design each person focuses on one project at a time. This means, unlike most Structural consultancies, whose approach to small projects is to scramble a quick design thereby providing oversized beams, we can design economical section sizes for structural elements.

What do you love most about your job?

Having designed new build plots of up to 50 new homes, hospital refurbishment projects and remodelled some flagship stores of major brands, I feel content in knowing many of these construction projects will benefit many people long after I am gone. As for small residential projects such as loft conversions and extensions, when working for a large design consultancy, we never manage to see the final outcome due to other incoming projects so I am looking forward to finally see projects from design to completion.

What inspired you to start your own business?

Admittedly, I know breaking away from a corporate design consultancy will involve scaling down work towards much smaller projects such as extensions and loft conversions. However, the corporate environment does not allow a good work-life balance, while firms do not provide small residential projects with the same degree of care as the larger projects. This is a gap Metrix Design can fill.

Why should our clients choose you?

Myself and some ex-colleagues collaborate as part of Metrix Design. We all come from the same corporate background where engineers have to juggle six or more projects at a time. In this mix of larger more profitable commercial projects the smaller residential projects are afforded less design time or due care as they are "churned out".

Metrix Design aims to take on fewer projects and thereby dedicate more time on these. By definition, engineers should measure (metrics) up the minimum size beams, columns and other elements needed for a project - but all too often I have seen projects with over sized/engineered elements which costs the client more, but whether an engineer specifies a 152 UC column or a larger 203 UC column does not cost the engineer more. The aim of Metrix Design is to measure up cost effective designs. The architectural design by an architect (we can connect you to one) along with our structural design form the basis upon which builders will provide quotes for the project. Bear in mind the builder providing the absolute cheapest quote is not always the best. I can guide you if you so choose.

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

Prior to any design work, a site visit will be required for investigating any opening up works to mark out specific dimensions, to ascertain nearby load bearing walls and note floor joist span directions. Loft access would be required even for a single storey rear extension.

Structural design work which includes structural calculations and structural drawings are typically emailed.

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

Upon arrival to any client's home during a site visit PPE in the form of a face mask will always be worn, as per Covid-19 guidelines.
