Plumbers are responsible for installing and repairing pipes that supply water and sometimes gas. They install baths, sinks, toilets, dishwashers and washing machines. Plus radiators and other drainage systems you may have on your property.

Plumbers wear lots of hats and can tend to many of our household needs, but there are some jobs they are more typically called out for than others. Let’s take a look at the most common jobs that plumbers get called out to.

Dripping taps

Dripping taps aren’t just annoying to listen to, they can be a sign of a more serious problem. They also waste water, which can increase your utility bills if it isn’t rectified swiftly.

The causes of a dripping tap can include a worn-out washer, scratched ceramic disc, damaged cartilage or a loose o-ring. Essentially, a component within your tap either needs tightening or replacing. Usually, the problem is a quick fix, but it requires a plumber to double-check everything to correctly identify the problem.

Leaking pipes

A leaking pipe is more serious since it can cause significant water damage and even flood your property. Pipes leak for a wide variety of reasons including a broken seal, corrosion, incorrect pipe laying, damaged joints, high water pressure or underground movements.

It can be tricky to locate the source of the problem to isolate it. But the pipe will need to be repaired or replaced to stop it since leaking pipes only get worse with time.

Running toilet

A running toilet might sound like everything is in order, but it refers to when a toilet constantly ‘runs’. It happens when overflow water leaks into the bowl from the tank. You’ll notice this problem if the toilet is constantly making the sound of running water as if it’s refilling, even when not in use.

A faulty flapper or chain may be to blame. Your plumber will need to carry out a variety of tests to find which aspect of your toilet is causing the issue. A running toilet can often be fixed by carrying out some simple adjustments to its inner mechanisms.

Blocked drains

If a drain is blocked then nothing can flow through it properly. This isn’t what you want in any drain since not only will water not go down properly, but you could have water and other unsavoury substances flowing back up too. Or, an overflow outside which floods your garden, leaking potentially hazardous waste.

A staggering 93% of all blockages are caused by wet wipes, which is why it is not recommended to flush them down the drain. Even ones that claim to be ‘flushable’.

A plumber may use a combination of physical tools and chemicals to remove the blockage. Sections of a drain may also need to be removed if the blockage still cannot be shifted.

Heating problems

Central heating typically works by warm water running through your radiator, which is heated by a boiler. Your central heating may stop working for a variety of issues, or you may want radiators installed or moved. Either way, if the issue isn’t a boiler fault (unless the plumber is also a registered gas engineer), then you’ll need a plumber to fix the problem.

An example is radiators which are not heating up evenly from top to bottom. In which case, a treatment called power flushing can remove any sediment or sludge from the inside of your radiators. Your radiators will then heat evenly and work correctly.

To sum up

If you’re experiencing any of the above problems, then be sure to call a plumber to come and assess the situation rather than trying to fix it yourself. Or worse still, leaving it to develop into a much bigger headache.

While plumbers are usually one of those people you call when there is a problem, they can also help with the installation or maintenance of water carrying structures throughout your property. So, don't hesitate to call a plumber if you need any water-based appliance or pipework installed, maintained or repaired.
