The Forest of Dean is a magical place with so much natural beauty. It's home to many species of bird such as Goshawk, Hawfinch, Buzzard and Dipper. When I visited the Forest of Dean, I was mesmerised by the sheer beauty of the place, and the wide range of diversity and habitats for all the birds, from a lake to forest. It's an excellent day trip, and is also great for children to go out and do some exploring. It's a fantastic place to visit for ornithologists, nature lovers, and those who love the outdoors. It is so worth visiting! More...

A great place to relax and to walk, we been to the sculpture park, did the round walk and it was quite good. Very relaxing, if you do not see anyone, quiet, lots of birdsong. Some path a wee bit muddy, mostly gravelpath. Some sculptures were really good, some not, but that's my view. One in particular, the cathedral glass window is amazing!!! There is plenty to do for kids at beechenhurst, coffee place was well stocked with food and staff friendly.Plsnty of parking spaces. We did had a grand day out.... More...

AONB with an improving restaurant, bar and lunch scene. The local district council blocks much-needed investment in tourism. Local services would improve with that inward investment. Time to realise the area's potential. More...

The Forest of Dean is one of those "undiscovered" places in the UK. People, on hearing the name, thing of the New Forest - somewhere completely different and several hours away from here. It's possible to walk through film sets for multiple Sci-Fi films and programmes if that's what you want. You could pop down a coal mine to see how it used to be done - there are several mines still in operation within the Forest, operated by the Freeminers, a fascinating group of people who hold hereditary rights to be able to do odd things within the bounds of the Forest. A decade ago, or thereabouts, the area received a large injection of cash, and was able to start to regenerate multiple places. Even the addition of the new "Welcome to the Forest of Dean" signs made a huge improvement. If you've never been, you can spend just several hours here or several weeks; look up what you can do here - apart from the wild ponies (we have wild boar instead!), anything you can think of doing elsewhere you can do here, so why not come and see for yourself? I had a bike ride through the Forest of Dean back in 2022. I crossed over the Severn Bridge and came north through Tutshill. I stopped by Wintour’s Leap and I continued through St Briavel’s to Coleford. The area was very picturesque with some fantastic views. It was a lovely place for a bike ride though challenging in places due to the hills. There aren’t many shops around so make sure you come prepared. More...

Perhaps I looked in all the wrong places, but the forest seemed to lack the really old trees I would associate with an ancient forest. Still beautiful though.
