I needed a selection of images to use on social media - essentially me, in a variety of poses, holding a board, on which I could superimpose messages.
My goodness - what a great session we had. I was expecting endless standing around, waiting for stuff to happen. Not a chance. Phil was totally prepared and, in no time, was clicking away. What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?
It's often all about the lighting. If you're photographing people, then once you have made them relaxed and at ease, then the correct lighting will make or break a photo. For static things like products, great lighting can make the difference and brings the images to life.
Composition is also vital and is what people often mean when they say that someone has a "good eye for a photo", it means they automatically know how to position themselves (and the subject) so that the resulting photos are amazing.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
I'll always bring my experience to a project to help guide a client to what the want or need.
It's often rare when someone knows exactly what they want or need, so I will often start by asking why they are getting the photographs done.
If it's product photography, then what is their target audience and are the photos just for online use or for magazine or posters as well. If they are looking for business portraits or actor portfolio shots then what is their main purpose for getting the shots done and what media are they being used in - are they wanting indoor or outdoor and natural or rural (city) settings or with backgrounds, And do they want the results in colour or black and white (although we always provide both).
What are their timescales for getting the images done?, Are they looking for indoor studio type shots or outdoors?
Will they need actual prints or just digital images?
Can they give me an idea of their budget?
What do you love most about your job?
Meeting People. I love what I do with a passion. Every photoshoot is different and always presents different challenges which are fun to solve.
Those challenges might be because some products reflect light in a tricky way or a person hates having their photos taken, we find then generally that those challenges are small and that, through experience and a bit of time, we easily overcome.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I have been taking photos for over 40 years (15 as a full time professional). I worked many years ago in retail (at Dixons) and so could take home any camera and lens that I wanted to borrow and really use them in the real world. This allowed me to honestly recommend to customers what they needed to buy in order to take the types of photos they wanted.
This lead to a passion for photography that has stayed with me - I'm excited now, producing the results that people really love and that they need.
I had seen some of the underpar results out there and this led me to starting PJB Photography Ltd in 2005.

If we can't deliver what you want on time and in budget then we won't take on the project. If for some reason we don't deliver images that you love then we'll redo them or give you back your money. We do a large amount of image enhancement that can be done remotely - the actual taking of a professional image nearly always requires us being with the subject or item being shot. we are happy to receive products to photograph at our product studio in Kettering.
We do also have a portable studio set up that includes the latest digital studio flash guns - we can set up a studio style setting in most homes and offices and also use these lights to great effect outdoors. we can come to you.
What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?
Covid-19 is less of an issue than it was (written May 2024), however, we make certain that our kit is clean and well maintained. Screens and backgrounds are cleaned using disinfectants following any use of them.
Business Portraits and Headshots
You don’t have long to make the best impression. Your image on social media and your website must say the right thing about you.
Having an “out of date” image or worst still an image from a wedding or a holiday snap can often create the wrong impression - (unless that’s the “look” you're going for of course).

We make sure that we understand your reasons for getting your business images done and so can then work closely with you to create a great set of effective images in a relaxed fun way that will bring out your personality.
Sessions typically last 1-2 hours and can be studio style, outdoors or a mix of both. We bring the studio to you! we just need a little space to set up in.
You’ll receive at least 15 images of your choice from the session and you can purchase additional ones if you wish.
You will get final images in colour and black & white, both in HI-resolution and in a file size ready for social media.

PR Photography
We understand that you’ll need PR images quickly that tell a story and have impact.
We work closely with you to fully understand what you are looking to achieve and from there capture a set of images that get the job done. We work closely to any existing corporate guidelines or briefs that are provided.
We can edit immediately and can often have finished results to you within 1 to 2 hours of taking the final image of a session. We supply images to you using file transfer and provide HI-Resolution images as well as to the size and specification that you request.
We can work with your clients at locations that may be far from where your offices are located, providing you with a valuable local resource.

I’ll come to you and do a full photography session with your beloved friend. This way they feel more relaxed being in an environment the already know.
Whether it is a Dog, Cat, Snake, Horse or anything else, we’ll come and get some amazing shots for you.
We can do this at your home, stables, or at any local outdoor location that you want.
