What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?
Technical skill and experience and taking the time to understand the clients' requirements fully.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
It's really important to get as much information from clients as possible so that accurate estimates can be produced and work can be delivered to match the client's requirements. Bark does not provide a thorough enough briefing system for professional photography assignments so I will always ensure that I have as much information as I need from them before submitting an estimate.
The following information is the minimum that a photographer will need before being able to put an accurate estimate together for you. If anyone you're dealing with DOESN'T raise these questions with you, be prepared for unexpected expenses further down the line.
FOR PRODUCT PHOTGRAPHY
- How many products do you have to photograph and what are they? Do they need any special preparation before the shoot? Do you need to have models involved in your shoot? Where is the best location for your products - plain studio background or lifestyle shots of them being used?
- How many shots do you need per product? Just one general shot or many details?
- Will you be attending a shoot at my studio or are you happy to work remotely (approving set-up and general look online beforehand)?
- When do you need the final images from the shoot?
FOR FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY
- What is the purpose of the shoot? General brand awareness or sales / advertising?
- What are your products / style of garments? Menswear? Women? Evening? Sportswear etc
- How many products do you have to photograph? Do you need multiple shots of the same product?
- Do you need to have your products modelled? Will you be casting the models? Do you need someone to provide hair and make-up for the shoot?
- Are you considering a studio or location shoot? What mood are you going for in the photography? What location are you considering?
- When do you need the final images from the shoot?
