Absolutely top class experience for someone who was totally new to the instrument. Have been professionally guided for last 6 month of my saxophone adventure. Every single visit of the Headwind Music shop was rewarded with dozen of generous tips covering everything from equipment/instrument selection and handling to an advice and demo of techniques of playing and learning. Had a fantastic experience yesterday at Headwind. Such a good find and cannot speak highly enough of the three owners Tom,
John and Ben. So fantastic that these guys have taken their love of music and particularly the saxophone and set up shop, literally.
They have a great selection of saxes, new, used and vintage as well as a vast supply of mouthpieces, reeds and accessories and their passion and knowledge is refreshing.
I live abroad and once a year on my return to the UK I usually look for a sax to add to my collection and purchase a number of reeds and accessories in bulk to last me the year. This time I was in the market for a vintage Selmer tenor sax and I discovered the Headwind website through a Google search. I called the shop to enquiry about a particular horn and spoke to Tom who was immediately friendly and accommodating. He then informed me about a couple of other horns they had in stock as well and I asked him to send me a few photos which he did within a matter of minutes.
I jumped in the car and drove from London to Bristol. Upon arrival I was not disappointed. The shop is very well presented and I immediately felt like a kid in a candy store. After a quick chat I was shown to a private practice room, served a fresh cuppa, set up with wi fi and then to top it all off was presented with a much larger number of beautiful vintage tenors to try than expected.
Selmer balanced action, super sax , mark vi, large bore and Conn 10m. All were in great playing order and prices were sensible.
I was then left to try all these horns at my leisure as well as an abundance of new and used mouthpieces. The room was spacious and comfortable and even equipped with a small fan and a window.
Buying a vintage sax is quite a big deal and takes time to choose the right one as it's usually very subjective in terms of which horn is the best fit for the individual. The three owners clearly understand this concept as I arrived at 145pm and even though the shop officially closes at 6pm I was still there at 8pm! I was very conscious of the time but the guys were extremely gracious and I could tell they appreciated that I had driven a long way and genuinely wanted me to leave a happy customer with the right sax. Indeed I did, I left with a rare, beautiful early vintage Selmer, a great new mouthpiece and several reeds and accessories. The guys even gave me a used gig bag as the original case was cumbersome and tired and not plane friendly!
All in all I had a memorable and very enjoyable experience yesterday at Headwind and I cannot say enough about these guys and what they are doing. I wish them every success with this venture and I will certainly be visiting them again. Thanks very much guys and now it's time for me to check on the new baby!

Just purchased a yanagasawa baritone sax from Headwinds, to go with the yamaha 82z custom sax, yamaha alto sax, otto meyer tenor sax mouthpiece and god knows how many other accessories i have purchased from this shop during the last 12 months. .As you can guess, I am a big fan of this shop and the guys who run it. The baritone sax was my most expensive purchase and have been umming and amming about this for weeks/months. The guys have been always patient, giving me lots of models to try out and to choose from, with a no hard sale/pressure attitude. They encouraged me to bring down my own baritone sax to compare which i did...before deciding on the yanigasawa which i am really happy with. Part exchange amount on a tenor sax and clarinet i am happy about. They have also kindly agreed to try and sell my mint condition Conn Selmer Baritone sax on a commission sale. So a one stop shopping experience. Once again I am very pleased with the service, kindness and respect these guys have shown me during the purchase. They are very professional, very fair and genuine and wont rip you off. They know what they are talking about and what will work for you! More...

I went In to Headwind last Saturday to buy a clarinet after my own ‘broke’. Came home all excited with a second hand Selmer only to find an issue when I came to assemble it. Absolutely fantastic customer service from beginning to end.

I was on the hunt for a new Soprano and Tenor sax. I initially emailed the store to enquire about p/x, my emails were responded to quickly and helpfully. The great service continued when I visited the store! There was no pressure and I was free to try anything and everything they had in stock should I have wished. 5 hours, many saxophones, lots of mouthpieces and helpful advice later I walked out of the store the happy owner of two new instruments!

I will definitely be using the store again and have already recommended them to others. Thank you Ben, Tom and jono!

When you enter the shop there is a calm atmosphere, a bit like being invited into a musical friend's kitchen. I am asked whether I prefer tea or coffee. I have come to collect my tenor sax which was bent and badly damaged when I dropped it. I'm offered a room to try out the sound. Everything is so responsive, the detached post has been mended, all the pads are back in place, it's as if I have been handed a new and expensive tenor. The difference is that it didn't cost an arm and a leg, £25 less than I was quoted originally, actually. Coffee, conversation, informed tips and friendly staff. What's not to like? More...
