I have used Heddon Structures for a number of projects now. The advice provided has been exceptional and I have always found the advice to be pragmatic rather than providing an unnecessarily over engineered solution.
Overall, I have been extremely happy with Martin and the team and I would not hesitate to use them in the future.

I really recommend Heddon Structures. We used them to do design work to remove a supporting wall. From the initial phone call I found Martin professional and knowledgeable. He worked with my builder to advise the steel work we needed and when we signed off the design the steel was on site the next day. I changed my design after the initial survey and it was no problem to amend the design. I wouldn’t hesitate to use them again. More...

Martin has done an outstanding job which required supporting steel girder for a chimney stack.

He is very professional, helpful and collaborative.

How can someone tell if their loft is suitable for conversion?
Maximising the habitable space in your property is a great way to increase space and hopefully adding value to your property. If your current loft area allows sufficient head room over at the ridge of the property, then this is a good sign that a combination of dormers and/or Velux windows would create an area to convert. Do remember though that stairs leading up to the loft requires space, so the net increase may be smaller than anticipated.
Run us through the different stages in the loft conversion process - what’s involved?
Stage 1 - Feasibility - Is it feasible to convert, taking into account access to the loft area, roof pitch and roof shape. Hipped roofs can be more problematic for example and as such the right advice is required early in the process.
Stage 2 - Constraints - Is the roof in a conservation area where planning permission will be needed or can it be constructed through permitted development.
Stage 3 - Scheme designs - Can the roof be strengthened to create the structure or could the existing roof be taken off and specialist attic trusses be installed. Often strengthening the roof is the most practical, however employing a knowledgeable professional will guide you through the benefits of both.
Stage 4 - Detailed designs - Creating internal spaces at loft level and the floor immediately below, taking into account Building Control requirements. This is the most important area for clients as prior to construction they should have sufficient information to make informed choices with regards to size, timescales and costs.
Stage 5 - Construction - It is important to appoint competent contractors knowledgeable and experienced in loft conversions.
Stage 6 - Sign off - Always ensure that professionals with the correct PI cover levels and qualifications look after the approval process with Building Control and compliance with the Structural requirements of Part A. Finally to safeguard your property and prevent any issues with the future sale of the property ensure that a building control certificate is obtained and if necessary obtain the required approvals for planning and/or leaseholder requirements.
What do you love most about your job?
I really enjoy finding solutions to provide great structural designs. Every day, every design and every project is different, and often these unique challenges make work exciting and rewarding.
What inspired you to start your own business?
Working at different sized companies in the past has given me an understanding that smaller companies are often more agile in meeting clients' needs. Seeing a project through from inception through to completion is very rewarding and by starting my own business up, I have been able to ensure that I am able to work flexibly with clients.
Why should our clients choose you?
As a Chartered Engineer with 20 years experience working in the north east of England, I have a breadth and depth of experience to ensure that clients have confidence when working with Heddon Structures Ltd.
Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.
Generally as a professional company, we would always provide a site visit to review any structure and site constraints. There are occasional exceptions such as when detailed architectural drawings for the existing and proposed layout are available, however we would still always like to check the spans of floors/walls and construction of elements to ensure our designs are safe.
What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?
Communication with clients is key to ensure risk is minimised. As a company we would always provide formal appointments in advance of works and if there is a need to enter an individual/companies property we would always wear sufficient PPE (in line with current government guidelines). As we try to minimise face to face meetings we have rolled out online consultations with clients over Microsoft Teams when appropriate.
