I would recommend Gilmour Architects without hesitation. Mary designed & oversaw the renovation and extension of our 1920’s semi-detached house. This was a project in a conservation area and we were keen to both preserve and restore as much of the original character as possible - even while proposing to double the original footprint of the structure. Mary’s ideas and vision for our home were second to none. She was a pleasure to work with on both a professional and personal level. Throughout the course of the project, Mary brought us seamlessly through the stages of planning, tender and the build itself with flawless communication and extreme attention to detail. With her experience, knowledge and wide network of contacts Mary ensured that our planning application was approved the first time around and within 8 weeks of submission. How can someone tell if their Garage is suitable for conversion?
Less work will be required if the existing garage floors, walls and roof are already insulated .
Run us through the different stages of the Garage conversion process - what's involved?
Planning permission may not be required, depending on the amount of new openings (windows and doors) that are required and if the existing external appearance will be staying roughly the same (i.e. not converting a flat roof to a pitched roof.)
Building control approval will most likely be required.
How can someone tell if their loft is suitable for conversion?
Head height is an important issue - although additional room can be created by including a flat roof dormer.
The existing ceiling joists may not be suitable to carry the additional floor loads, so new joists may have to be provided.
Run us through the different stages in the loft conversion process - what’s involved?
Again planning may not be required, depending on the need for new windows and their size/location.
Building control approval will most likely be required.
You may need to carry out additional work to parts of the existing house in order to cater for fire regulations and fire escape for the newly converted loft space.
What’s your interior design process?
We work closely with the client to cater for their tastes but provide advise in contemporary styles and trends as well.
Which interior design styles can you cater for?
We can cater for all interior design styles but we would aim to blend the existing style of your home seamlessly with the current style of your new extension/refurbishment
What do you love most about your job?
Creating someone's dream home and providing them with something that they never even thought was possible.
What inspired you to start your own business?
My father and the fact that I had gained valuable experience working for a number of other architect practices in Northern Ireland and England.
