Lauren completed a full renovation of the basement in the “old” part of our house which dated back to the 1940’s and had become a collection area for anything we were reluctant to throw away. In that we were away during much of the process, she managed the the project independently while all the referring to us for significant design decisions. We now have a contemporary workout and storage area which is a tremendous enhancement to our house overall. More...

Q&As

The first thing to consider is the construction of your roof. If you have a trussed roof then it would be a very invasive and expensive job to add the extra space. If this is the case it might be worth considering an entire new roof shape to maximize space.
If you have a clasic pitched roof then your main concern is height. You should have about seven and a half feet of height if you wish to use this space as a closed living quarters; however, it could be as low as 6'10" if it is an open space.
This is step one. Hiring an Interior Design professional that offers architectural services would be the next step!

When starting a conversion like this I like to understand what the family really wants and needs to get out of this space so I can create a functional design for everyone. Once that is agreed upon we get our permit package together and submit to the city. As soon as it is in we can begin the real fun!
Usually lofts are a blank slate so there isn't a lot of tear out involved unless we're changing the shape of the roof or adding a dormer.
The first stage is the rough in stage: This is where we add all necessary mechanicals such as drains and vents, electrical, hvac, framing and finally insulation.
The second stage is starting with finishes: all the drywall and flooring is installed, followed by the millwork and doors. Walls are primed and painted and the lights and switches are installed! You're at a pretty finished state here but. . .
The Third Stage is furnishings: This is where we've built in those special pieces and brought in our hard and soft furnishings. We can even finish it off by installing artwork, displaying collections, and helping to organize items for storage!

Services

We implement your design from start to finish by taking care of ordering materials, managing subcontractors as well as our in house trades team.

If you're not in the Toronto area or you have a tighter budget or Design at a Distance service offers a lot of flexibility.

The most important part of Interior Design services (in my opinion) is the space planning! Why stick with your current floorplan if you can find greater functionality and beauty with a change?

Whether starting from scratch, or changing out old for new, we can help create a functional layout and choose complimentary materials that will make this an in demand space.

We can create an entirely new space for your kitchen to live or offer a refresh package that offers just a big an impact.
