FROM FRUMPY TO FANTASTIC IN 2 DAYS! Our dream of a large cedar deck turned into a nightmare of sanding and staining within a few years. We spent more time maintaining the deck than lounging on it. Our 2023 resolution was to reclaim our leisure time during Ottawa’s all too brief summer. The perfect solution came in advice from Ryan Cornel, the owner of Final Touch Decks and Fences. He recommended TimberTech decking as an alternative to composite decking. The quality difference was obvious when Ryan placed samples side by side. We chose Castle Gate by TimberTech without any hesitation. The good advice and personal touch continued - our notional design was to divide the horizontal boards with a single vertical board down the middle of the deck. Ryan pointed out that this would result in a waste of materials and money; adding a second vertical board saved hundreds of dollars. The final design also eliminated a drainage problem with the original deck. Ryan was confident that a slight overhang on the sides and front would protect the storage area under the deck. Ryan was right – no more water running down the exterior walls and a design in perfect balance! The Final Touch team worked well together. In addition to being highly skilled they were respectful of our property and our time. This dynamic foursome transformed our deck from “frumpy to fantastic” in two days. After meeting and talking with Ryan it became clear he took great pride in his work and wouldn’t be satisfied with just “good enough”. Ryan and his team completed a major deck build for us - approx. 470 sq ft, new structure with helical pile supports, PVC deck boards, multiple level, metal rails and 10x12 pergola. The project took about a week to complete, working every day through that time. The crew was professional, pleasant and very helpful. Ryan's design ideas and suggestions throughout were great. This team was extremely easy to work with and the finished product not only looks fantastic but is solid as a rock. Our project was quite challenging as we required a building code variance from the City of Ottawa due to the deck being built 6 feet above grade while extending into the minimum property setback. Final Touch was very supportive in providing drawings and information necessary to complete the extensive paperwork. In terms of deck construction, Final Touch personnel were friendly, professional, polite and careful to leave a clean and tidy worksite at the end of each day. They showed up on time and completed the project on schedule. A couple of additional add-ons were accommodated with no fuss and very economically. We have a deck which looks incredible and is rock-solid. Two neighbours who are very knowledgeable in the building trades went out of their way to tell me that they had watched the building process and were extremely impressed, no short cuts and the small details done to a high standard. A building professional doing some warranty work on our home exterior asked if we were installing a hot tub on the deck (we're not) as he had never seen a deck built so solidly.
