ME12 4AX 09 May 1988 - 01 July 2012.

At various points in my twenty-four year career as a prison officer, I had responsibility for the security, supervision, training and rehabilitation of offenders committed to prison by the courts. This includes motivating offenders to do what is best for themselves and others around them within a safe and healthy environment.
In addition to my custodial duties as a, prison officer, I was responsible for establishing and maintaining positive working relationships with offenders, balancing authority with a large amount of understanding and compassion, in order to effect rehabilitation.
The nature of the role demands the ability to think on your feet, make quick decisions and deal effectively with unexpected situations.
The final seven years of my career in the prison service was spent in the Attitudes, Thinking and Behaviour department where I facilitated offending behaviour programmes such as the Enhanced Thinking Skills programme, the Cognitive Skills Booster programme (where I ultimately became the Cognitive Skills Booster treatment manager) and the Cognitive Self-change Programme.
I left the prison service because I had become dissatisfied and disillusioned with the job as it had changed so much since I had started it in 1988. I also wanted to relocate back to the North East following the break-up of my marriage which had caused me considerable stress at the time.
