Community Development

I have been involved in a programme that was initiated by the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal at the Westville prison. My role in the programme was to facilitate the male Youth Centre and female prisoners in creating performance pieces that were meant to help them deal with the challenges they face in their day to day life in prison and to also formulate strategies as to how they can heal from the emotional scars caused by the physical and mental abuse they face in prison and also the trauma they face dealing with the consequences of the actions that led them to prison. My part was to facilitate them as they create plays drawing from their personal experiences and using Augusto Boal’s techniques in helping them realise better choices and ways of dealing with situations. We also try to help them in getting healing from the various ways in which they have been dehumanised and equip them with moral skills not just for prison life but help them prepare for life outside prison.
