Currently working on a non-fiction/historical fiction book based on my grandmother, Betsy Wallerstien Hutchison's diary, which chronicles her experiences as a 14 and 15 year old girl working for the New York Women's suffrage headquarters in 1914 and 1915. She reflects on her participation in demonstrations, marches and lectures, meetings with many of the leading suffragists of her day, including Christabel Pankhurst, as well as on her impressions of a London trip seen through her eyes as tourist/suffragist, experiencing the city in the height of the militant suffrage movement. Drawing on letters, newspaper accounts and records from the suffrage movement, I plan to incorporate stories from her later life as a suffragist and labor activist, including her days as a Barnard student during which she was imprisoned twice for her participation in the "Watchfire" demonstrations in Washington D.C.. The influence of Betsy's mother Nellie Jastrow Wallerstein will also play a role in this story. Nellie, the daughter of a prominent Philadelphia Rabbi who refused to let his intelligent and motivated daughter to attend college, fought this prejudice, secretly attending classes at the Universities of Pennsylvania and Wisconsin where her brothers were deans of their respective departments.
