Voltech Instruments

Background: Voltech is a privately held company specializing in Multi
Phase Electrical laboratory grade Power Analyzers, passive component test and transformer testing. Voltech is the leader in automated transformer testers.
The US operation declined over recent years with aggressive competition and I
came in to help revive sales and form a worldwide applications support capability .Annual revenue is now running at around $2+M in US and Voltech have recently sold its power analyzer IP to Tektronix. Had to lean this new business quickly while building revenue.

* Apps support for LCR and automated transformer testing
* Setup new Applications capability in the US, retrained personnel
* Technical proposals for monitoring and analysis of power systems
* IEC61000 harmonics and flicker compliance test products
* Specification and test of new software for power analysis
* Working with engineering to define new product requirements
* Written application notes for motor, LED, inverter and transformer testing
* Designed and wrote new material for web site solutions now live
* Power supply, motor testing and renewable energy (turbine and solar technology) technical notes for marketing
* Worked with major corporations for power measurement/analysis and transformer testing (Emerson power, GE, TUV, Apple, Linear etc)
* Hands on responsibility for all Technical and Applications support

Outcome: Company now entered into an agreement with Tektronix for the transfer of all power analyzer technology.

Applications Manager, Bluetooth Audio semiconductors


Background: Broadcom acquired Zeevo, a Bluetooth audio startup. I helped merge this startup into Broadcom and develop the applications group.

* Team of 6 hardware and 3 software engineers in CA, Taiwan and Korea
* Hands on Responsibility for all headset Reference designs, RF and digital
SOC. PCB layouts, system analysis etc
* Circuit analysis and design for customers with critical view of audio distortion, RF spectrum and BQB compliance
* Working with design team for ultra low power management
* Very cost sensitive reference designs with emphasis on minimal RF filtering and efficient power management at the IC and board level
* Built electro acoustic team from the ground up, the only one in Broadcom
* Worked with ASIC design engineering, PLM, marketing and sales for new
Bluetooth tapeouts and sustaining business
* Helped customers with UL, FCC, BQB, CE etc
* Tier 1 customers include Motorola, GN, Nokia, Logitech, Samsung and LG
* Helped customers with CM issues
* Software applications management

Outcome: Economy took a dive and Bluetooth worldwide inventory increased to over 2 year levels, sales temporarily declined. Skeleton team retained while developing new tape outs which were more competitive

Spirea Microelectronics

Europe and CA
Systems and Applications Engineering (WLAN, 802.11) Responsibility for all technical and some sales for North America

Background: Spirea was a VC funded startup in Sweden formed from the
First Ericsson Bluetooth design group. It was an RFIC front end product for a/b/g. While at Conexant/Skyworks worked with Spirea with the view of them
being acquired

* Worked with customer engineers and design group for new designs in the
* Responsible (with Europe) for all reference designs
* PCB layout, RF filtering, PA, compliance
* Worked to ensure that wireless baseband and RF designs were integrated
correctly in each unique customer environment both firmware and hardware
* Helped with customer compliance testing
* Worked with Spirea ASIC team to optimize throughput performance

Outcome: Several design wins in California and with Intel. However European team lost confidence with no baseband capability and funding dried up.

Technical manager, Wireless Infrastructure

now Skyworks

Background: Helped start new infrastructure group deviating from historical
GSM handset RFIC designs with the view to broaden the business

* New group to expand from terminals to wireless infrastructure (cellular and
* Design of new medium power Multi Chip Modules (MCM's) Power Amplifiers for WCDMA, CDMA and WLAN up to ISM bands
* Cadence design environment from circuit simulation (ADS) to layout and tape out
* Managed small team of 6 RFIC engineers for GaAs 30dBm PAs and RFIC's
* Group also oversaw development of very high linearity front end modules for cellular base stations
* Developed new business with Tier 1 companies such as Nokia and Ericsson
* Worked with Skyworks MCM plant in Mexicali
* Recommended Spirea as partner for WLAN RF development and also
developed high power (30dBm) WLAN MCM PA

Outcome: Decided to join Spirea, the WLAN startup I had been working with in Skyworks. During this time merger talking place with Alpha Technologies

Black Storm Networks

Background: Opportunity to start new wireless company

* Part founder of newly formed wireless incubator group
* Initial goal was developing GSM and WLAN convergence
* Developed a "blade" concept of radio modules and some initial design
* Help with many pitches to VC companies and received $5M funding
* Within a few months after Sept 11 2001 funding collapsed

Outcome: This was a short lived engagement with 9/11 changing everything

RF Hardware Manager, later Director

interWAVE Communications

Background: Moved from the UK to this new startup in CA. At that time
it was a very small group with little definition but good funding. Became a GSM
mini/microcell company where I took over base station development

* Hands on management of GSM base station design team for 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz
* Built team of 3 RF and 2 DSP engineers for new base stations
* RF designs including RF cavity filtering (procurement) , synthesizers,
modulators/demodulators, up/down converters, PAs etc
* Unique single blade radio module with high isolation from DSP to RF
* Developed concept and design of "Turbo" base station products with a three
channel 20W PA in the same small cabinet
* Special heat management for small three channel GSM power amplifier
* Products became industry standard for third world GSM infrastructure and compact installations such as cruise ships
* Helped system specification of new WCDMA base station
* Wrote some 5 patents for masthead designs and converged WLAN/GSM
* Company was acquired by Alvarion

Outcome: Moved to new opportunity with Blackstorm to as co founder

GSM Technical Manager

STC Radio and Microwave

for Nortel Europe
Background: Joined STC to get better digital radio experience, later Nortel
acquired STC in Europe to enter the cellular market later acquiring Matracom as well.

* Responsible for working with Matracom to design new GSM transceivers when Nortel acquired Matra
* Power amplifier system design and procurement, modified and re
designed MatraCom transceivers
* Hands on management of 15 man team of RF engineers
* Frequent travel to Paris to work with MatraCom team
* Installation design for "SMART" GSM antenna employed in the US. This was a 4* range improvement active phased array antenna and DSP
* Development of special cables with LaBarge in Missouri becoming industry

Outcome: Moved to US for new opportunities

Principal RF Engineer

Racal Avionics

Background: Major opportunity to do something completely new for worldwide
Commercial avionics. This was a very exciting project with much publicity for which I was there from beginning to end

* Responsible for all aspects of RF avionics design for prototype airborne
satellite telephone system
* System design of L band PA, up/down converters, LNA and aircraft switched
beam antennas with ESA in France
* Flight trials with Racal Antennas on company Jestream aircraft
* Large development team including British Airways, British National Aerospace, ESA and SNEC in France
* Responsible for installation design and installation management onto BA 747
aircraft in Heathrow
* Presented live in flight trial with UK national television
* System now known as Skyfone with Honeywell, new avionics standard
especially for business jets

Outcome: Very good feel good factor after this but I needed more digital radio experience and moved to STC for this. This was also a prototype program not a production program.
