Qualified electrician with many years in the electrical contracting industry. I used to own my own contracting company in South Africa but moved to Zimbabwe in 1992. I moved back to South Africa in 2012 for family reasons and for the education of my three childern
De Weijs Veendam Holdings
I also established a company whose function was the mining and processing of natural stone, quartzite, into tiles, mosaics, etc. This company grew to approximately two hundred employees. A shareholding agreement was concluded with a Dutch company names De Weijs Veendam Holdings, whereby they acquired a 50% shareholding in the Zimbabwe Company. They began exporting to various countries such as Holland, Hong Kong, RSA and USA. The company also began importing consumables such as diamond cutting blades from China. In 2003 / 2004 due to the then prevailing economic conditions in Zimbabwe, a new company was incorporated across the Zambezi River in Zambia. Finance was obtained through a Dutch Grant and 1000m² factory with all the relevant equipment was established. Most of the machinery was imported from China.
Mining claims were then established through the Zambian Ministry of Mines in agreement with the local cities of the area, and in late 2004 the company, Zambezi Natural Stone Company (PTY) Ltd began supplying locally as well as exporting to Holland, Hong Kong, RSA and USA. The company is still operational.
As well as being Managing Director of this company, I also undertook small electrical projects. I have since resigned and relocated to Rustenburg, RSA for family reasons and the education of my three children.
Estimators and various other staff
T&H ELECTRICAL CONTRACTORS
From June 1975
The company eventually expanded to four companies namely T&H AIRCONDITIONING AND REFRIGERATION; T&H PLANT HIRE and T&H ELECTRICAL WHOLESALERS.
I was Managing Director and 80% shareholder of the group. The companies employed numerous Contract Managers, Estimators and various other staff.
The group successfully completed and commissioned numerous major contracts for large mining houses and construction companies. To name but a few: Impala Platinum, JCI, Murray & Roberts, Stocks and Stocks. These contracts included multi-story buildings, underground HT and LT reticulation, HT reticulation, LT and HT concentrator and shelter installations county wide as well as neighbouring countries such as Mozambique. In addition numerous air conditioning and refrigeration contracts were successfully concluded.
Unfortunately in 1991 the platinum price fell through the floor and most of our contracts with the mining houses were terminated, whereupon we liquidated the company.
In 1993 I relocated to Kariba in Zimbabwe. I bought a house and properties. I became involved in the tourism industry, catering to overseas visitors as well as local, for boat charters, fishing and game viewing.
