Work History

Retail Salesperson, Student Propagator,

Good Hope Nursery

July 2013 - August 2013

I was the salesperson at the retail nursery, where it was my responsibility to ensure the entire nursery is presentable to the public, while reorganizing plant displays, arrangements of plants, labeling of plant species, as well as aiding in consolidating and transporting bagged plants to the growing areas.

I also planted up a number of South African indigenous plants while at my short stay here at Goodhope Nursery, which has not only considerably increased my passion for indigenous plants, but my knowledge of them as well.

Garden Maintenance Supervisor

Urban Landscape Solutioins

August 2013 - December 2013

I was a supervisor of eight workers at the Tygerberg Business Park, where it was my responsibility to ensure the upkeep the gardens within the business park.

My responsibilities were:
Ensuring the entire business park is in good condition.
Ensuring the irrigation system is functioning properly.
A liaison between my manager Schalk, and the site manager at the business park.
Delegating work to eight workers, and ensuring the job gets done, while safety being a priority.

I was a supervisor for five months and for this duration I understood how to communicate efficiently and effectively to my workers, and to other business that I was in correspondence with. I learnt how to plan (Time management), and schedule work to become more productive.

I understood how to deal with stubborn and difficult workers, and to get them working as efficiently as my other workers.

I learnt an extensive amount at my stay at Urban Landscape Solutions where I gained a large amount of practical knowledge as I have a better understanding of how the maintenance industry works.

Student

Fairholme Plants

November 2011 - January 2012

I propagated all sorts of plants, from flowering exotic perennials, to grasses, to lavenders, to ground-covers, by means of cuttings and division.

I was a rep for Fairholme nursery, as I collected plant orders from the many nurseries in the Cape Peninsula, as well as the delivering of plants. I also managed the nursery for a month when Duncan Henderson (Owner) went on holiday.

Projects

Companion herb shade area

My friend needed a cold frame in his garden to produce some beautiful lush organic herbs and some vegetables. We got many workers and helpers to dig the drainage system and to secure the poles in place, we then mixed the original soil with a few bags of river sand, volcanic rock dust and topped it with a thick layer of kraal manure mulch on top.

1st Job Landscaping Sea Point Garden

The project was a small garden entrance area situated next to a pool. The client requested for the grass to be removed and a low maintenance seating area to be created while keeping the area relaxed and elegant. I chose Tuscan colored square tiles with terracotta colored stones to suit the small garden's theme.

5th Job Landscaping Lawn to Veg and Herb Beds

The project was to create vegetable and herb patches that is situated on the back lawn area. As I had the whole lawn area to work with, which receives full sun most of the day, I could be as creative as I wanted. I planted all sorts of interesting vegetables such as tomatoes, celery, swiss chard, beatroots, carrots, beans, peas, chilies, peppers, potatoes and many more. The herb patches consisted of Thyme, Lemon Thyme, coriander, parsley, chives, origanum, marjoram, rosemary, apple mint and many more...

4th Job Water feature - Pond

The project was to create a large 1000L to 1500L pond that will later hold fish. I decided the APH-3500 71W submersible pump would be best choice for this size pond. I added small stones to line the bottom of the pond and larger ones to hold and hide the plastic. I also planted Aurim lilies (Zantedeschia aethiopica), Mexican sage (Salvia leucantha), Helebores, Iris and Hibiscus around the pond. I placed Water lettuce, Water Hyacinth, Cyperus prolifer and Cyperus textilis, Canadian Ditch moss, Hornwort and Kariba weed in the water to absorb most of the fish's excrement, and to create pleanty of hiding places for the fish.

3rd Job Landscaping Ottery Patio/ Garden

The main requirements for this project was to remove all existing plants and replace them with one deciduous flowering shrub (I chose Bauhinia galpinii) or small tree and one evergreen flowering shrub (Magnolia 'Little Gem') and to plant interesting indigenous smaller shrubs and ground-cover species among the them.

2nd Job Landscaping Milnerton Medi-clinic Entrance

It was my job to create an entrance area that requires minimal maintenance on a low budget. I chose plants like Aloe ferox, Echium sp, and restios as well as an assortment of Vygies, Carpobrotus edulis, and incorporated tan colored gravel.
