Whilst I have been with Haldane for 5 months recent difficulties within the company is likely to lead to staff redundancies. Given my short period of employment I am concerned that I may become unemployed and I am therefore looking for alternative employment.

Footpath Skills Trainee

Cairngorms Outdoor Access Trust

April 2011 - December 2012

Aviemore Office, Dell Farm of Rothiemurchus, AVIEMORE,

I gained the "SVQ Environmental Conservation Level 2" in June 2012 following a fixed 8 month period with the COAT as a footpath Skills Trainee.

Whilst employed with COAT I was part of an 8 man team responsible for the building of Upland and Lowland paths extending from 50m to 4km in length within the Cairngorms National Park. The footpaths were formed in a traditional fashion suited to the barren land and capable of withstanding the extreme weather conditions for many years.

Frequently very large stones below the ground would need to be manually removed or re-located, given the size of these and to avoid injury each member the team would need to fully understand and anticipate the actions of others. The remoteness of some locations (Ben Nevis) required Safe working practices to be given the highest level of consideration and as a result considerable training was provided in the preparation of Risk Assessments. "First Aid at Work" training was also given to all members of the team.

Unfortunately funding for COAT was limited and the contract ended on the 16th December and whilst I now find myself unemployed, I do however try to keep occupied and occasionally do some voluntary work on a local farm driving a tractor and helping out around the farm.

I estimate having spent many hundreds of hours dedicating my spare time to the Fife Air Cadets Conservation Group (FACCG). This interest has most definitely led me towards an outdoor career rather than follow a more academic life.
The group operate a vegetable garden at Sugar Acre in Falkland and also own a large area of gifted land at KILLIN called the "Colin...
