Tshipi Borwa Mine (Tshipi Mine) has relied upon a temporary operational plant and several contractors to manage early production and other operational functions. As the number of employees grows, so does the burden placed upon the company to effectively manage the mine and associated production facilities at desirable levels.
Using a number of contracting companies to perform various operational tasks resulted in some disconnect in the various mining business processes and therefore it was required for a mining specialist to work closely with the General Manager (GM) of Tshipi Mine, to develop a programme for operationalization of the various mining management processes and systems.

Project Information Systems was defined as an integrated set of mutually supporting tools, processes and methods for managing project information. Applied in a consistent way to support the decision making and information needs of the project stakeholders and Tshipi mine.

• Define the solution for the replacement of the Anglo Platinum division evaluation system (PDES) and head office metal accounting system (HOMAS) in the group metal accounting department at Anglo Platinum head office with Mincom metal accounting system – MinPas. Feasibility Study Engineering Design for the Rowland Shaft UG2 Silos Loading Facility Replacement 25

The scope of the project refers to replacing the current head chute and tripper conveyor with a trouser leg type chute and fixed conveyor respectively at Lonmin Rowland shaft on the 25 level. The current tripper conveyor was modified to align with the proposed design. The top section of the existing head chute will be re-used, while the bottom section will be completely redesigned. The new bottom section of the chute will have a flopper gate to control the transfer of waste or reef into the relevant silos. The flopper gate will be actuated by 2 x 250mm diameter pneumatic cylinders.

Lonmin Rowland Shaft Feasibility Study (Phase One) and Pre-Feasibility Study (Phase Two) Engineering

The project was divided into two stages. Stage one was to audit and assess the existing surface and underground infrastructure 18 to 24 levels and to prepare trade off studies. Based on the audit findings, the mine design criteria and production schedule, stage two concentrated on the engineering design of the new decline systems 25 to 37 levels. This included the design of the link between the new decline and the existing underground infrastructure

I was the project manager position on this project

Rowland Merensky decline 23 to 26 levels engineering designs.

The project consists of all work related to the development of 23 to 26 levels and associated development to a defined scope of works. Preliminary designs and cost estimate of the on reef conveyor belt from 26 to 23 level with a capacity of 30 000 tpm.

The Magazynskraal/Sedebelo Project comprised mine surface infrastructure and underground mine design

This Scope of Project refers to the Magazynskraal / Sedebelo East new Platinum mine surface infrastructure and underground mine engineering design, and describes the activities, functions, and principal features of the working areas. Included in the services, are functional areas of Project Management, integration, scope, time, cost, design and quality, risk, communications. The project consists of all work, related to the development of Magazynskraal / Sedebelo East Platinum project and associated development to a defined scope of works. Preliminary design and cost estimate of the surface infrastructure including the process water and power requirements.

I was a lead engineer on this project and I had full responsibility of the all engineering developments (designs) of the new mine which include conveyors design, winder, underground layouts, silo system, surface infrastructure and many more.
With regard to the Engineering Development (Design) the following were conducted:
All designs were preliminary for costing purposes agreed by the mine. The Boynton specifications, standards and codes were used as the basis for the design (where they were not existed, we had used RSV’s standards and codes) with any amendments that were required.

These design requirements took into consideration the following:

• SHE requirements;
• Water drainage;
• Legal requirements;
• Foreseeable local and social constrains;
• Cost effectiveness;
• Off-site conditions that have an impact on supply and /or product transportation;
• Standardisation of equipment and spares;
• Criteria for operability, reliability and maintainability;
• The design life of the facility and the equipment;
• Safety parameters used in the basis of design;
• Operating conditions within the facility;
• Occupational health and safety issues identification;
• Cultural and Environmental requirements.
