Engineering Maintenance Manager (British American Tobacco)
Initially employed as a Production Team Manager, managing 35 staff in the operation of £30million worth of production machinery producing 50 million cigarettes per day. Transferred to engineering in 1998 as Maintenance Manager, managing a team of 4 managers and 35 engineers. Responsible for the modification, maintenance and improvement of £300 million worth of production machinery and conveyor systems throughout the Secondary Manufacturing Department producing up to 40 billion cigarettes per annum. Managing multi million pound budget. Significant role in the development from scratch of an integrated maintenance management system (IMMS) covering corrective, planned & predictive maintenance. Spent 9 months working with software engineers to develop a computerised maintenance management system (CMMS) which has saved the company in excess of £10,000 in its first year, whilst in addition making the IMMS more powerful, flexible & relative to company needs. Over 3 years I developed a performance data collection & analysis process feeding into a comprehensive series of computer spreadsheets & databases designed to measure the efficiency & effectiveness of the IMMS as it is developed.
Part of the management team which has over a 7 year period, implemented a complete restructure of management style, incorporating new industry thinking to reduce unnecessary administration and costs, whilst increasing workforce accountability & flexibility. Played strategic role in helping the Secondary Manufacturing Department
attain ISO 9000-2001 as part of a plant wide initiative.
Aircraft Maintenance Manager (Royal Navy)
Initially trained as aircraft technician in aeronautical engineering including aircraft sheet metal repairs. Promoted to Engineering Manager in 1973. Responsible for planning & execution of aircraft flight & deep maintenance schedules, flight / engineering interface. Managed in depth electrical, weapons, avionics & mechanical fault diagnosis teams. Analysed test flight data. Final authority on ‘Aircraft Fit To Fly’ certification post major repairs. Spent final two years service as lecturer in RN engineering college.
