Application
In this project, various devices in the rail system including Railway Engines' on-board entities, trackside entities and other distributed equipment shall be communicating to each other over an open non-trusted network medium and using EURORADIO protocol. In order to ensure the safety of this open communication and for the authentication of the source of messages, 'Symmetric-Key Encryption', a technique in the Cryptography, was chosen for this secure communication. This technique involves a secret Key shared by two communicating entities and it is used for both encryption and decryption of the messages. Further, the devices shall also use Message Authentication Code [DES CBC variation of MAC] to verify that the source of the message is legitimate. Thus together, the system communication shall be ensured for not only the security of the message but also the verification of the source of the message coming in. Further, the use of ANSI x.3.92 encryption standards, widely known as 'Data Encryption Standard' [or DES in short] and Triple-DES, a variation of the previous one was needed.

The Source Code Generator is to be treated as an Integrated Development Environment (IDE), where the user can develop Test Programs (TP), written in the C language, for Automatic Test Equipment (ATE). The SCG provides fast navigation within a test program, enabling the user to view and modify any part of the Test Program effectively. It gives a better overall view of the Test Program and can generate certain parts of the Source Code such as function prototypes and definitions of index variables automatically.

Description
The IDE is developed in ANSI-C++ using widgets provided by X-Motif under X-Windows System. Various object-oriented design patterns are referred and used in implementing various functionality of SCG, resulting in a flexible design and improved maintainability.

The full IDE was developed from scratch. Some of the design patterns that are used are:
- Observer, Slightly modified Model-View-Controller (MVC), Singleton class
- Memento (for implementing Back-Forward, Undo)
- Abstract Factory (to shield classes from the type of widget set being used)

Description
The design involved the MVC architecture. The presentation layer typically involved usage of the Servlets and DHTML. The controller layer is implemented using Java servlet, which will identify the client's request and invoke the proper service. The business layer was developed using the EJB technology with session beans and the data layer with the Entity Beans. Oracle 8 was used as back end.

Cocobase was used for automating and assisting the rapid development. The architecture was flexible enough for high scalability, portability and open for interface with content management tools.

Application
The Source Code Generator - TP Library is a graphical tool, which allows the selection of a common algorithm or a complete test step from a database. The support for the TP Lib will be later integrated into the Source Code Generator. The TP Lib support can be called as a stand alone application, which stores the selected source code to a common file. So this program can also be used in standard editors such as Nedit or Xemacs. It also provides a facility for editing Test Step or algorithm parameters.
Description
The system is developed in ANSI-C using widgets provided by X-Motif under X-Windows System. This involved developing a GUI to enable the end user to select some predefined Test Steps or Algorithms from the database. The database is just plain directory structure under any Unix Systems. The user after selecting the Test Step can change the parameter values in the Text Fields and save it under a different name for later use.
