Ornamental stones are those which are used with aesthetic taste. They are both used in raw state and also in finished forms. There are hundreds of varieties of stones which are in use as ornamental stones in various forms like flooring, roofing, and cladding for interior decoration both in residential, commercial and civilian structures. The demand for then is ever increasing globally. More so is in India because of the increased buying power of people and the influence of the west. Obviously this industry is growing in leeps and bounds to cater to the needs of both domestic and international demands. The State of Karnataka is endowed with rich deposits of ornamental stones, as it is mainly a hard rock terrain. With abundant granite, gneiss and migmatite bodies spread over the entire Karnataka, it attracts a very good market from both indigenous and foreign investment point of view. The above said rocks display spectacular characteristics in terms of their exotic colours, texture and pervasive structural features. Over 90% of the ornamental stone quarrying pertains to these rock types. The other important rock type which attracts huge investment is dolerite, which is well known in the commercial sector as the black granite. The other rocks, though are not attracting big investment, are still in demand, are limestones, phyllites, shales and other specifically featured (naturally) rocks.
In spite of the good demand for ornamental stones and the corresponding industry, there are many inherent geologic problems associated with them like the location, structural aspects, quarrying problems, policies related to their quarrying and lack of a systematic economical analysis of the whole scenario especially from the point of future needs and other strategic considerations. In this background the present problem has been undertaken.
