My Career in Composites Technology
I joined Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre on 24th December 1971 in the Fibre Reinforced Plastic Division then led by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and has been a composites professional all through my career. After nearly forty years of service, including a two year extension, I retired as Deputy Director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre leading its composites team.
I had the opportunity to acquire comprehensive experience in composite technology spanning product design and development, processing, design of Special Purpose Machinery for processing of composites, establishment of facilities and infra-structure and development and implementation of systems.
Brief out line of areas of work and experience gained is given below:
A) Comprehensive Experience in filament winding technology including
-Design and Development of indigenous CNC filament Winding Machine
-Development of software for filament winding
-Design and development of high performance spherical pressure vessels, with titanium alloy liner, to international standards for spacecraft and launch vehicles.
This product is a valuable import substitution and placed the composite team as one among the few establishments in the world with this capability.
B) Established world class facility for processing of structural composite products
The facility comprises of autoclaves, UD Pre-preg Cutting Machine, Five Axis CNC Machining Centre, CNC 3D Co-Ordinate Measuring Machine and Processing bay with controlled environment.
C) I was leading the Composites Structures team for design and development of advanced composite products for communication and remote sensing satellites. Product range includes solar panel substrates, yokes, antenna reflectors and payload support structures.
D) I took initiative for the induction of composite primary structures for launch vehicles through the development of payload adaptor for the PSLV. I have pursued this effort and played the lead role to develop and induct Inter Stage 3/4, PS3 Adaptor, Dual Launch Adaptor for PSLV and then Payload Adaptor, Lower shroud and Payload Fairing for GSLV. These were followed by development of the Payload Adaptor, EB Shroud and 5M Diameter Payload fairing for next generation launch vehicle lvMk3 as well. The effort of the team led by me has enhanced the role of composites in launch vehicles and has contributed to achieve significant payload gain. The growth in this scenario in the last decade has been acknowledged to be phenomenal.
E) My experience stretched beyond filament winding and moulded composite structures and included ablative composites and development of carbon-carbon products. I led the team for development of very critical composite component for high pressure long duration liquid propulsion engine of next generation launch vehicle Mk3.
F) My initiative to develop a small scale industry, in parallel, for realization of 3D Preforms has fructified and helps realization of carbon-carbon products.
G) Established and streamlined documentation procedures and review systems for realization of composite products and their quality assurance. My experience in functioning as Chairman of Process Review Committee, Local Salvage Committee, Non- Conformance Review Board and Vice Chairman of Design Review Committee has helped me a great deal in this effort.
H) I have played the lead role in developing industrial partner for manufacturing of composite structural products for launch vehicles and spacecraft with comprehensive knowledge transfer including excellent system engineering tools to ensure product quality assurance. The products include solar panel substrates, yokes for spacecraft and pay load adaptor, Interstage ¾ and PS3 Adaptor for PSLV. This opportunity has given me valuable experience in vendor evaluation, vendor development, knowledge transfer and system engineering to realize high quality products from industry.
I) As part of my efforts to strengthen systems, I have introduced PDM (Product Data Management) for data acquisition, archiving and data retrieval for system compliance and quality management ensuring mapping of entire product history of all products. This will also serve as knowledge transfer tool. This is a pioneering effort in ISRO.
J) During my tenure as Deputy Director, Composite entity of VSSC has been recognized as Center of Excellence in Composites. I have provided leadership to my team for the integrated development of facilities, processes and product range leading to the emergence to such a status.
K) Have the exposure of technological process elsewhere by visits to different establishments worldwide in USA, Germany, UK and RUSSIA.
L) Have organized INCCOM 1 and INCCOM 8 the ISAMPE NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMPOSITES as President of ISAMPE (Indian Society For Advancement of Materials and Process Engineering), Thiruvananthapuram Chapter.
I have been awarded ASI SPACE GOLD MEDAL of Astronautical Society of India in 2004. I have been awarded ISRO MERIT AWARD as well as ISRO-ASI AWARD in 2009. I have been part of the award winning team for the development of composite payload fairing.
