Joined as a graduate engineering trainee and rose up to B4 management grade with beginning sal Rs 750 and leaving sal Rs 13,500 over 6 years and 9 months.
Worked mainly on Intel and Motorola family of processors and system design and applications to power systems, telemetry, chemical plant/factory automation, operating system , compiler design, networking, power plant simulator , radar data processing, defense applications. Completed PGDST from NCSDCT TIFR and M Tech IIT Mumbai while working.
Automation of a chemical plant
We defined a chemical plant with equipment in sections and processes in terms of states and change of states and materials or fluids passing through various sections and equipment processing the raw materials to produce finished goods. The definitions are generic so that they can be ported from one plant to another. The work was specifically done for Hindustan Lever's plant at Taloja MIDC in 1981-82-83 for a plant that produces refined Coco butter from raw coco butter. The product was refined coco butter which was to be exported and the raw material was coco butter that was produced in Kerala. The process was defined by the Hindustan Lever R & D people (Dr Bhandari and his group including Mr Rahalkar, Mr Nayak and and others). The process was explained to myself, Mr Manvinder Chopra, Suresh Wakhlu and others at TEC R &D by Dr Bishnu Datattrey Pradhan. We used Computrol 80 , an in-house system developed by Freddie Dinshaw and his group with Deepak Gupta, Dr Harsha Dabholkar, Balgopal, Marphatia, Pulsatia, and others overseeing it. The system was around Intel 8080 with separate processor,memory,i/o cards. The programming was done on Intel Microcomputer Development System referred as MDS80 in a programming language PL/M and the object code was transferred to Electrically Erasable PROM which had a capacity of a few Kilobytes. The Computrol 80 system was tailored in terms of hardware and software to suit the needs of application of the chemical process and the plant. Successful.
Telemetry and sending signal over long distances using electrical lines
Sending signals over electric line is called as telemetry. One can achieve switching function as well. If there are two power stations then they could connected over through power lines and one send signals from one to another through the connections. One can also switch across through these lines. The experiment-cum-project was carried out for Tata Electric Companies(TEC) itself using the in-house developed Computrol 80 system. I was forced to work on Assembly language of Intel 8080 under the guidance of Dr Harsha Dabholkar, Suresh Wakhlu, Balgopal and Manvinder Chopra. The work involved understanding Computrol 80. So interacting with Freddie Dinshaw , Deepak Gupta and Marfatia, pulsatia, pai was a part of it. The point under consideration was can we connect two stations of TEC and communicate among them using high voltage transmission lines. Noise over the lines was a major issue. If the lines were three phase lines using neutral or grounding , if they were three phase 4 wire system, then corona effect has to be taken care off. Lightening arrestors and thunder storms were other issues in the project.
