As a freelance hydrogeologist I am providing expert service to Millenium EMS Solutions, Alberta, Canada and Andam International LLC, Oman.

Projects done for Millenium:

1. Developed several 2-D cross section models and simulated sulphate plume movement along the major flow directions for the closed oil storage site at Windfall for Husky Oil Operations Ltd. Compared different excavation scenarios and suggested optimum requirement of excavation to prevent sulphur contaminants reaching the aquifer.

2. Estimate dewatering requirements and impact of dewatering on local and regional water resources for Robb Trend open-pit coal mine for Coal Valley Resources Inc. to support their mine license and environmental construction application.

Projects done for Andam International LLC:

1. Suggested pumping location and schedule: Oman Refineries and Petrochemicals Company (ORPC) operates two refineries, Mina al Fahal (MAF) Refinery at Muscat and the Sohar Refinery at Sohar. Recently the operation of Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) Plant at the Sohar Refinery has been severely affected by offshore algal blooms. This problem has resulted in shutdown of the SWRO and consequently in shutdown of the Refinery due to lack of desalinated water.

In order to overcome this problem ORPC retained Andam International LLC to conduct a hydrogeological study to assess the feasibility of supplying water to the Sea Water Reverse Osmosis Plant (SWRO) at Sohar Refinery by constructing shallow beach wells. It is anticipated that the unconsolidated sand and gravel deposits in this area will act as a filter system to remove red algae and suspended particles present in the sea water.

I have been contracted by Andam International LLC to develop a mathematical model for them. The purpose of this model is to simulate the effectiveness of the beach wells and suggest the location and pumping schedule of the wells by comparing different scenarios.

General Responsibilities

• Develop numerical models of groundwater flow and contaminant transport for mine dewatering, water supply and contamination projects.
• Estimate dewatering requirements and costs for surface and underground mines.
• Predict and evaluate the impact of mining on local and regional water resources.
• Develop conceptual hydrogeologic models with mine geologists and engineers.

Specific Achievements

• Estimated dewatering requirements and extent of drawdown for different scenarios of proposed and no action plan of Turquoise Ridge Joint Venture gold mine expansion project in Nevada, and determined the effect of proposed action plan by subtracting the no action plan. Developed a transient groundwater flow model by using MODFLOW-Surfact in Groundwater Vistas. Model was calibrated through year 1940 - 2011 and predicted dewatering different scenarios up to year 2050. Also simulated a 500 year pit lake recovery scenario to predict the time required to reach steady state.
• Estimated the dewatering requirements for Voisey’s Bay underground nickel mine in Newfoundland and Labrador. Constructed the groundwater flow model in MINEDW along with FEMCAD, FLAC3D, Viewlog, and ArcGIS.
• Developed a database for Phoenix groundwater modeling project.

Specific Achievements

• Constructed groundwater flow models for all the 14 different municipal wells in Raisin Region and South Nation Conservation Authority’s jurisdiction. Calibrated each model separately and ran particle tracking to define Time of Travel (ToT), also estimated Surface to Aquifer Advection Time (SAAT) and Surface to Well Advection Time (SWAT). These data were later used to assess aquifer vulnerability define threats as per guidelines of the Ontario Ministry of Environment. Also prepared technical reports, attended meeting with the clients and technical advisory team. Project completed in December 2010.

• Estimated dewatering requirements and extent of drawdowns for Garson Mine Dewatering project by construction numerical model for Inco. Also constructed the geologic model by analyzing borehole logs and picking geology by using Viewlog.

• Modified the source code of a climate model “WABAS” developed by Clarifica Inc. to couple in with MODFLOW. Clarifica’s WABAS is a catchment based model which generates average groundwater infiltration, runoff and evapotranspiration from rainfall, temperature, evaporation, land use and surficial geology. Modified code was renamed as VL-WABAS which has increased performance, generates cell based output that can directly be used in a finite difference groundwater model. VL-WABAS was successfully applied in groundwater modeling of Black, Holland and Rouge river watersheds, Ontario to determine the fate of leachate contaminants from the landfill site.
